Both my uploaded rides today (from garmin) have been tagged as mountain biking in Strava. Haven't changed anything and it doesn't seem to be an option on the drop down list of activity types in the app. Happening to anyone else?
Hopefully they've finally added lift assisted riding too

And gravel riding apparently. And 3d maps.
Ah, good tip.. https://cyclingtips.com/2022/06/strava-now-has-an-off-road-interface-trail-routes-3d-activity-feed/
Nice!
These are the new ones

So if you ride a mountain bike route on a gravel bike can you still get a mountain bike KoM?

Yes - if you're going uphill, not if you're going downhill!
I wonder if Strava will recognise the terrain and then select which bike you're riding from your bike stable, or allow you to define which bike you want selected for different kinds of ride.
Would be good if it interfaced with settings on Polar that already define a ride as mtb or road
Very late to the Gravel Party! It's almost over 😉
I just had a look at a run I did at lunchtime today. It came up as Trail Run when I went into edit mode. Strava is either looking at the terrain or it has taken that activity type from Garmin Connect.
Where are you seeing these new options? I can't find them.

Appears to be in the App, but not on the web... Assume it will get updated soon...
Don't see it there either
I had a pending app update on my phone, check yours is updated.
Thanks... that fixed it for my phone.
I only ride park so still waiting for lift assisted options!
looks like it might be a Beta feature. My strava updated this morning and it doesnt have the new activity types. I just joined the beta programme and the app updated again. now the types are available.
Slightly off the topic! Last trip to BPW my Garmin/Strava upload only shows the actual riding and not the uplift. I’ve always just left the Garmin on when I visited so always had the uplift recorded too. It seems to do this only if you have a speed sensor.

You'll have auto pause on and with the Garmin getting speed from the sensor, not from GPS it'll be (auto)paused when it's on the uplift.
I always pause mine when on the uplift anyway with GPS speed.
If they could allow me to hide other peoples Virtual Rides from the feed, i'd be happy. Or marginally less grumpy, at least.
I’m assuming they’re taking the ride type from the type you select on your Garmin, rather than recognising the surface on a map.
more likely they are taking the ride type from the one listed in your equipment details..
Is this going to screw up all the segments we’ve already created? It was needed when Strava was new, not a decade+ later!

Yeah 100% this. I like to follow people and see interesting routes etc. not 15 daily iterations of ****ing Makuri Island 🙄
That said I'm guilty of being a bit lazy making my own indoor efforts private, so a lot of people are probably very bored seeing my turbo efforts also! An indoor/virtual filter would probably be very handy for everybody.
Did I read that you could filter the heat map by activity? Would be useful to distinguish road from gravel etc...
Elevate (formerly known as Stravistix) allows you to hide all virtual rides, plus rides/runs under a specified distance.
If you want others to show your actual totals towards monthly challenges, you can set Strava app (not website) to make activity viewable by everyone and "mute" the activity (it will show in your log, but not feed of your own activities).
I've done a little test - I have no equipment listed in Strava. I've done one ride recorded as 'mountain biking' on my Suunto watch, and another recorded as 'basic cycling' and that info matches the ride category on my Strava activities.
Most importantly - will it now display metres/feet descended rather than ascended as one of the key stats?

No! Why is this not a thing?

if you finish where you start, surely this is the same number?

a bike segment (not ebike) is a bike segment. regardless of type of bike. same on foot, if I go for a hike, it picks up running segments. if I go for a kayak it picks up paddleboard and rowing segments.

Take care if you are a strava user and also a member of Mossad or similar. Even with full privacy settings (apparently) someone can create segments and then find out who runs through them.
What I'd really like to see is, in route creation, a mountain biking heatmap.
They have all the data, as the mapping software knows (broadly) what is road and what is off-road.
It's nearly there, as there's the "prefer dirt" option, but the global heatmap still includes both tarmac and trails. A mountain biking heatmap would be fantastic for discovering new trails in areas you don't know.
