Calling all Singletrack riders near the Scottish Borders!

Next round of the origin of Adventure Racing, the Scottish Mountain Bike Orienteering League is on 10th June 2012 at Yarrow Valley ! Set to be a great event with a fantastic Race Area for you to take on the challenge!

Mountain Bike Orienteering (MBO) are fun off road event were YOU choose the course! There are 30 electronic checkpoints scattered across a 60 to 100 square kilometre playing area. The winner is the person who collects the most points in a set time (normally 3 or 4 hours)

I've just done Ten Under the Ben and that was a tough day, hopefully things will be a little cooler for Yarrow ! But it will still be as much of a test of endurance for those who want to go flat out, or a relaxed adventure and introduction to the sport for those considering giving it a go for the first time!

Entries for Soloists, Pairs, and the Generation category which gives you the chance to race this adventure with your mountain biking younger selves!

Solo’s – £15
Teams – £25
Generations – £15
Juniors – £10

I dont know of any other events this good that are this affordable!

Looks like a great area 🙂 I managed to get to the Glentress event earlier this year and it was great fun, so I might just have to give this a go too! Looks more out in the wilds than the trail centre one I tried before.
Perfect for us Mountain Bikers who used to just pick up a map and go out in the hills 🙂
Cheers

To be honest its an absolute hoot, its a really good challenge for a pair of mates, you choose your own route by looking at the map and seeing where the checkpoints all are, then you MTB around the area which always seems to bring a good mixture of trails and amazing views. At the Glentress event I rode for three hrs and spent hardly any time on trails I knew. Even i'f its a wee bit of a drive the cheap entrance fee balances out the petrol..

As per the kit list you should carry a compass, even a cheap one, but in the last three years ive only brought it out in confusion twice! All the checkpoints are on the trails theres no hiking across moorland or through forest. You get a checkpoint sheet at the start giving you a clue for each check point too.

ie: Checkpoint 1, 10 points, on gatepost on south side of track.

Check point 5, 30points, on south east corner of mast.

The best bit is having a pint afterwards and looking at the map and saying we shoud'a coulda' gone this way or why didnt we see those contours !!

Maybe see you at Yarrow then!

I did this event last year and it was amazing. Gorgeous sunny day with amazing views and beautiful scenery.

The Yarrow Valley is an awesome place for a mountain ride. The two sides of the valley make for some really interesting route choice and 4 hours is perfect for this event as you will be able to visit both sides of the valley and really see the Scottish Borders away from all the trail centres!

Was a great event - anyone else do it? Has to be one of the best locations for an MBO, the deep valley makes for good route choice and some great riding.

Ended up being a bit of a battle for me - snapped my shifter pod off the bars in an innocuous crash about half way in. Couldn't really change gear when the bike was moving after that, then snapped the chain from cycling cross-chained. And got vicious leg cramps in the last half hour. Other than that, though, it was spot on 🙂
