[#993384]

So, this Holdsworth what I am hispterizing*, has the original Weinmann 750 centre pull brakes. Given I'm moving from 27" wheels to 700c, I'll need to full effect of the reach, and so will keep them.

Of course, centre pulls used to have a bad rep, but I'm sure can be made to stop well given the right pads.

Sooo..... what pads for some old centre pull brakes from the 70s (noting that this bike will, among other activities, find itself in winter chaingangs soon enough)?

*I may not, in fact, be very hip. But you all guiessed that, didn't you? 😀

afraid i can offer much comparison.....

identical centre pulls, with cheap halfords road pads + 700 wheels (possibly from a charge fixed thing) are a whole load better than the same brakes with leather insert pads against chromed 27" wheels.

they are not as good as v's or discs, obviously, but they stop perfectly well imo. Clean cables/outers and new pads, should be fine.

I have Weinmanns on my old roadie. They have modernish canti pads (Koolstop grey I think) and are alright on an aluminium rim.

Cheers, chaps. All the encouragement I need.

Right, off to locate some cheap Kool Stops.

Of course, for ultimate stopping power, I always recommend a carefully selected pedestrian, preferably one without 20:20 vision.... 😳

If they are in need of tidying up I have a complete display/storage unit of Weinmann bit. Eg nuts, springs, washers etc. Too much to say exactly. any needs, just ask. Prices would be based around the odd nugget.
