Following my ‘what bike’ threads, here’s what I ended up with:

With some judicious buying and some second hand bits, I reckon £1700, and 23.5lbs.

Pretty happy with it, but some XTR 970 cranks would be nice and I'd like to go 2 x 10 at some point too.

I reserve the right to change the stem though.

Photo deliberately taken on the driveway, and the grass had just been cut anyway.

I like the high rear triangle 'chainstay' - really does away with any chance of chainsuck damage or chain slap.

Stem indeed too long, your weight'll be too far over the front for good suspension balance and handling. Imo 🙂

Very nice. The M960 chainset is indeed a pain when it comes to new rings or running it as a double. I've seen some people running it as a double having taken an angle grinder to the spider, ends up looking pretty good.

Wheels were bought new and fully built up by JRA, so nothing to do with me guv'nor.

Stem might be a bit long, but its only 100mm, and the bike is for long XC jey rides, so I'll have to see.

On my heckler (same design) the chain batters the underside of the chainstay, small strip of rubber (or some sticky velcro maybe) sorts it.

I quite fancy one of those, set up long and low for fast big mile rides.
