Does anyone here have direct experience of Moab and Fruita in late October? We're receiving somewhat mixed signals - some saying its too prone to rain and cold spells to risk the expenses and others saying its still very dry and the temperature is ideal. we're trying to fit it in for half term week so would seem silly to go if a high chance of being rained off half the time.

cheers

You should be good for either Fruita or Moab in October. Always a chance of rain I guess, but generally here in the Southwestern US, September and October are two of the best months weatherwise---the heat of summer has broken and the later fall/winter rains/snows are still a ways off. The earlier in the month you can do it the better the odds of good weather, but in reality, if I was to place a bet, I wouldn't hesitate----more often than not blue skies, moderate temperatures and little wind.
I'm in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the first half of October is when they schedule the International Hot Air Balloon Festival because of the best odds for good weather.

agree with busy - first half of Oct is killer; great riding at that time of year (used to live in Colorado).

it can get cold, but cold doesn't stop you riding, does it? rain? probably less chance than there is in UK at that time of year, but of course who knows; wouldn't be enough to put off though.
