My road bike has a double chainset, with 8-spd cassette shifters etc.
My wife's bike has a compact chainset, and is 9-spd.
Would it be feasible to fit the compact (9-spd) chainset to my bike, using existing chain etc? I guess the 9-spd chainrings will be slightly thinner, so should fit in the 8-spd chain ok. Am I going to have issues?
(and yes I know it leaves my wife's bike unrideable, but she's about to drop a sprog so won't be riding for a few months)

Yep should be just fine. If its an older taper or splined internal bb make sure you swap that as well to keep the correct chain line
