[Closed] Middleburn X-type cranks and 10 speed?

OK, so if you were going to get some Middleburn X-type cranks, would you go for Middleburn Duo rings at 26/39 or a normal spider and use cheaper, better shifting Shimano rings?

All pros and cons considered, but the Duo rings will always be expensive and I buy my Shimano rings cheap off the classifides.....

Peter,

Duo will be chainlined for their mid-width to cassette.
Duo will be lighter than spider + 2 rings.
Duo is Middleburn-specific, so pay their prices.

Spider will be chainlined for the middle ring - middle cassette.
Spider (5-bolt) can give a 20T granny.
Spider is a one-time purchase allowing cheap rings.

I would buy an old RS7 set of square tapers and get the 5-bolt spider.
Just checked - you can fit a Duo to RS7.

Avoid Middleburn ISIS like the plague...I will elaborate when I see you.

Paul, yes, fair comment, but I left SQ Taper behind years ago.... I never got on with it. I wouldn't touch ISIS with a 100ft barge pole! 🙂

I've got a £100 Middleburn voucher, but even with that the X-type with duo rings is £153.60 which is still more than I've ever spent on cranks and I'm not sure it'll be any better than a 2012 XT double.......

I might just spend it all on chainrings and flog them on, then put the money towards XT 10sp

I bought the middleburn x-type Duo cranks recently for my sram 10 speed set up. Works perfectly, just take time in setting up the gears and the shifts up front are sweet, plus I'm no pro racer so not worried by speed of shift as only talking 100ths of a second! main concern is that it actually changes gear.
Also the new duo which I have mounts on a 4 arm spider so to make the replacement rings cheaper as before the inner duo ring was the spider so was costing around £80! not any more. Buy them from RJC Xtreme as will only cost you £205 as you get a £20 discount for items over £100 I think. Here is the link to save you time:

unless your chainstays are 'too wide' and the cranks hit the frame. then you have to wait 3 months for your money back whilst they 'try to sort it'.

Pictures? I know Middleburn aren't great at keeping their website up to date* but I can't find any reference to that.

look on the link I posted for a reference on the 4 arm spider. Also the clearance on the chain stay is identical to my previous XT cranks! so I take it you have been reading other threads and not actually tried them?

i had the 1st black set of cranks they sold - i've owned them, and experienced their customer service. the clearance is very much different to the XTR's which replaced them, and they admitteed that there was a problem, which they tried to fix by making the spindle a couple of mm longer/changing the spider.

i wasn't the only person with the problem.

don't get me wrong, they were lovely cranks, and i'm sure they'd be fine on most bikes (and i assume they've fixed the problem). but having waited for a long time for them to release them, and then spank £200 of my student loan on them the day they went on sale, i was disapointed to find that the QC/design was poor, and that their customer service was awful.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience, I have always used middleburn cranks and have also had to use their warranty in the past with some faulty isis cranks and they were first rate. As with the BCD I don't have a clue, I would imagine that it would be the same as most shimano as you can fit the chainrings of your choice to these. I may measure mine if get time..

worth adding that i had a set of RS7 unos which were beautiful cranks - loved them. unfortunately one had to be angle grinded off a BB spindle - middleburn did sell me a replacement arm at a very low cost (which also took a while!)

Epicyclo: it's not really Middleburn ISIS, just ISIS in general which is notorious for dire bearing longevity.

My friend's experience with ISIS was just plain bitter.
He had ISIS BBs fail left right and centre, which is NOT a Middleburn issue.
However, he also had a pair of RS8s with the drive side broaching offset so you could not singlespeed them without a tensioner. This was not apparent whilst he ran 9-speed. Later found the non-drive side had the machining too deep to seat properly on the ISIS splines. The bolt bottomed out against the axle. We fixed this one by grinding 2mm off the axle splines and it 'works'.
Middleburn service was shockingly poor.
Had to wait over 3 months for the replacement ISIS drive side replacement as they only make them in batches, and they were busy stocking up on the new external BB models.
Not bothered them over the non drive side issue as life is too short.
I use Middleburn rings on several bikes, on Truvativ, Shimano and Sugino cranks and am pleased with the overall wear-rate and shifting.
Cranks I will avoid unless given for free.
Sugino Mighty 900s are as light and very reliable.
