Nope, still think they've missed the mark, although I'd be interested in trying it.

I need new chainrings, cassette and chain - 9 speed.

Even if I buy new from LBS should still be £300.00 less than a complete new groupset.

I think you should Nick. The shifting action has been worked on so you get the same feel whichever end of the cassette you are at. Shimano have not just stuck another cog on the cassette.

So it's just a new chain, cassette and shifter? Or have they changed anything else?

Yes I saw that, I'm definitely interested to try it, suspect I'll grab a demo bike some time!

New chainset too, different ratios: 24/32/42

New rear mech as the cable accutation ratio has also been changed slightly. So in theory you won't be able to use a 9 speed rear mech with a 10 speed shifter.

Why didn't they just go for the SRAM 1:1 ratio, or even more cable pull, beat SRAM at their own game?

Hurrah, I didn't know my life was incomplete until now.

SRAM 10 speed is 0.8:1, so there's now 4 different ratios!

Hurrah, I didn't know my life was incomplete until now.

i was always complaining about the non-linear increase in shifting force needed on one of the levers on my right-hand shifter too!

has production of 9 speed stuff stoppped then?
will i be *forced* to upgrade if my cassette wears out?

I wouldn't worry about that just yet. Look at how long 8 speed has been available after the introduction on 9 speed. The choices will just become more limited over time I would envisage.

I run low normal mechs so haven't noticed this non linear shifting force you speek of as the spring does all the work for me 🙂

You'll be lucky, the X.0 one is lighter than XTR, but costs more: $200

Still a good deal IMO, suspect I'll be using those next year.

No they're not, much to the annoyance of many on Weight Weenies! There are a couple of companies that can mod a 9 speed one though.

Edit: These guys are meant to be pretty good, if you speak Spanish...
