Looking for a bit of advice to avoid dropping over £100 on a set of tyres if they don't work. I'm currently running Velocity Dually 29er rims with 3.0 Maxxis Chronicles, but they are clearly going to be useless this winter.
What is the collective wisdom of trying to run a pair of Maxxis Shorty 29 2.5 WT on the rims? Maxxis website states they are for 35mm rims and the rims are 39mm. I'mm guessing it should be ok, perhaps a bit squared off if anything, but would be good to know if anyone else has ridden them on wider rims.
It's not totally helpful this, but we've all been ignoring recommended rim widths for years, the WTs are no different imo, mine are on 30mm rims and work superbly.
I thought it might be a general guide, I guess going WT will be better than just standard though? I've never used Shorty's either, presumably they're a pretty good mud tyre?
It's not like an XC mud, a storm or mud x or whatever- it's kind of downhill mud tyre derived/evolved, so it's not as good at paddling through swamps as some are but it's miles better at actually doing fun stuff. Mixed mud and rock and root and such. Very #enduro. And absolutely fantastic at it. I think it depends what you really want, for me they're a far better option than a traditional mud tyre
Thanks Northwind, its for a Singular Rooster single speed as my main winter bike, live in the Peak District, so want something which is nicely "all-round" anyway, not bothered about out and out mud performance, just something better than a Chronicle in general winter trail conditions. Think I might take a punt on a pair, thanks.
It'll be a beast as a rear btw... Not sure what else to stick on there instead though. I use shorty front/dhr2 rear as a default option but that does struggle a bit with muddy pedalling.
