I used a HD last winter (on a Stan's Flow) and all was good
Wondering if the Minion 2.5 will better it in the muddy slop??
I'll be running the tyre on a Rabbit Hole, and I've heard the Hans comes up fairly big on the wider rim
Talking front or front and rear? The 2.5 DHF comes up smaller than the HD but the DHF is overall way more grippy. Especially when lent over the DHF rails corners. The HD is ok in the slop and I haven't used a DHF in that much slop but I think it would still is better especially under braking and corners. DHF rolls slower than a HD. Also I would note the DHF is not the best tyre I have tried on wet roots I find a CM is better at that.
Thanks
CM - Choir Master?
Front duty
Chunky Monkey made by Maxxis based on the ardent casing has its own tread. Very grippy tyre, rolls slower than the DHF. Has very easy characteristics large amounts of consistent grip.
I'm wondering what these tyres would be like on a 50mm Rabbit Hole...?
I remember reading somewhere (here I think) someone setting up a Hans D on a 50mm - surely that would be too square a profile??
I've been running a 2.35 HD 29er, and then switched to a 2.5 Minion DHF 29er.
The Hans Dampf side walls are wider than the DHF, but the DHF nobbles are way wider than the HD.
The Hans Dampf is very much more the XC tyre, I run my DHF around the enduro trails at Inners and similar.
For anything less technical, its overkill.
Its a shame they don't make a 2.35 or 2.4, as that would be far more appropriate.
frosty - what's the Chunky Monkey like in mud?

Horrible, or at least seems to float over and wash out.
Put a 2.3 Minion back on now for winter.

I believe the new 2.3 would fit the bill.

OP
The DHF will offer your far more grip round our local trails.
It will also build your legs up a bit. 😉
I've got the 2.3, its a 2.2....
On-One Chunky Monkey mounted on a 50mm Rabbit Hole rim (on the right in the photo), next to a 3" Surly Knard. I'm hoping the CM's will be the perfect 29+ winter tyre, worth a punt at £19 each I thought. Will test this weekend.
I'm also a fan of Hans Dampfs although they're more than twice the price.
New Nibby Nic looks to be a better winter tyre than the HD (judging by the 27.5 version we had today) fewer, wider spaced lugs but same size carcass.Dunno when the 29 version is out though.

Do they need building up?? 🙂
The Hans performed well today - needed to keep dropping more and more psi though till I thought it too low
Got one rim strike down some steps so thought I'm there at that 🙂
Looking forward to trying the DHF - next day tyres got it sent out same day 🙂
CM is floaty on mud that is why I switched to DHF 2.5 front and DHR II 2.3 at the rear for Enduro races and the natural trails I ride in Peaks during the winter.

Which version have you gone for?
And what about this?
Those Magic Mary's look like a good nuclear mud option. 🙂
Which version have you gone for?
3c Exo max 2.5
Don't show me any more tyres - I've managed to stop buying almost any for a couple of years now
Got the Minion today and mounted it up to ~18psi
It will stretch a bit I'm presuming, but not that much more, so 2.45" by my reckoning
Haven't been out on it yet, but the whole thing looks and feels more aggressive and sturdy - talk about sipes! 🙂
Here's a pic, with the Hans Dampf underneath for direct comparison
Be interested to get your take on em both.
I'm out on it (front of the Stooge) tomorrow, I'll report back 🙂
Have a 2.4 Nobby Nic out back, so decent combo I think
Magic Mary on 30mm internal carbon rims, knocks spots of the HD it replaced, it just grips everywhere, be it Lake District rocky descents, to Mendip limestone and rooty singletrack

I presume much slower rolling though - or not? Are you running front only?
No slower than a HD, I am only using at the pointy end though, does grip better than a dirty shirt, I loves it?
Fab - might give one a try.
I'll counter that. Its slower than a HD in TrailStar, in Gravity I'd have thought it would be similar.
The compound is far softer and it's about 200g heavier than the TrailStar.
If you've got good legs it really doesn't matter though.
I'll add the DHR2 into the mix. Love this tyre.
Was thread about fat bikes from the beginning or did that just happen part way through?
Magic Mary is a big, slow rolling grip monster, that doesn't happen to last very long.
The snakeskin (not even SG!) also weighs nearly 1kg.
Considering it's rolling speed and weight, it better be good at grip, as it's not great everywhere else.
DHF 29 I tried seemed to be enormous too, I found the 2.3 DHR2 a better tyre (F&R).
Magic Mary doesn't slow me down, just inspires me to push that bit harder, but we all ride differently so I doubt one tyre will suit all
I've run the DHR 2.3 as a front and rear tyre, on the rear its brilliant, rolls well and is very predictable, feels solid in the sidewalls and doesn't squirm, hard landings from jumps are pretty uneventful too.
On the front it looked like a cyclocross tyre to me, especially going from a HD 2.35. I measured mine up at 2.25 for a 2.3.
The 2.5 just feels like a more confident tyre. I'm also sure a lot of that is physiological due to the width.
I'm tempted to try a cut DHR II 2.4 at the front but not sure how different it would be from a 2.5 DHF. I would be surprised if MM roll like HD considering the size, weight and conpound I still want to try one though.
Ampthill....
I thought the same too. Started out asking is a Minion 2.5 29er tyre was good for XC. Which it is totally pointless for, the DHR 2.3 is overkill for XC, but I guess it depends on what you mean by XC. To most, that's riding around non steep, non technical trails.
You can't get a 2.4 DHR in 29er flavour. You also don't need to cut it for it to work well.
Well, after yesterday's little amble - ~30 miles of 'XC pub ride'which amounted to mainly bridle paths etc through woods, Kinver Edge etc which had its fair amount of mud, roots and the usual stuff you expect, I can say the DHF 2.5 was like nothing else I've come across
I'm running the tyre on my rigid Stooge, which definately has a rear weight bias, so front pressure can be ran super low. The carcass is uber stiff, and it took a while to find the psi I liked - which was pretty low - to the point where I was feeling the odd rim strike (down steps). Until that sweet spot the front was too harsh, but once dialed and I relaxed into it, all was good
The tyre looks pretty formidable. OTT for 'XC'? who cares. Grip levels are immense and you can really lean hard into the tyre. Rolling seems fine - again as a result of the lightweight front I guess
All in all I'm well chuffed

You out later?
Surprised we didn't see you over the Edge yesterday.
Yup - House!! 🙂
Might see you there.
Sorry, I was grumpy last night having missed out on the Scottish Enduro at Inners this weekend.
If it makes your ride more enjoyable, then regardless of arbitrary labels, it's the right choice 😉
I'm not here to judge just understand
^^ he he, no worries
Cheers for attacking me from the rear while my arms were folded up so i couldn't defend myself. 😉
After that cracking noise coming from my spine my back/shoulder blade pain has almost gone. 😀
Delighted 🙂
