I've been running a 2.1 Ignitor on the front and a 2.1 Advantage on the back of my Anthem X and it's worked pretty well through the summer / early autumun, but I'm finding it getting a little sideways as its got greasier.

In the garage I've built up a combination of the following (having decided to switch over to Maxxis) - though not ridden them yet - and would appreciate some suggestions on what combo to use...

2x 2.1 Ignitor
1x 2.1 Crossmark
1x 2.1 High Roller
2x 2.1 Advantage

Over to the STW Dept of Bright Ideas please. ๐Ÿ˜‰

getting sideways is the one of the funnest things about riding bikes, stick with the shady tyre choice all winter and you'll be a better rider come the spring.

Medusas if it's proper muddy

Darn! Can I make one out of anything I've got? ๐Ÿ˜‰

I sort of need a combination that'll do roadwork to get to the interesting stuff then something that'll cope with a combination of rocks / stones / light mud / a few rooty bits. And the moon on a stick please...

@GW - yeah; I did think that tonight - enjoy the slidy bits as it's bound to make me better, but I was teetering around on some singletrack that's a blast in the dry, so would like something to sit in between hanging on for dear life and improving my bike handling. I'm sure there's something out of that tyre hoard, and @lunge - I was thinking whilst looking at them the HR on the front would be worth a punt, so thanks for that idea. [edit] and burls72 too, thanks!

Was running HR front advanatge rear. Good all round combo. Got a ignitor 2.35 on the back now as I think a wider tyre on the back will be good for my type of riding - trail centers.

Thanks Pawsy - I'm going to try the HR / Advantage later today, but was wondering how the Ignitor fared on the back. How well does it hook up being a quite open / knobbly tread? Did you find it spinning out at all? Cheers for all the suggestions.

For the last two years I've run Ignitors front and back all year round on my Rocky Mountain Slayer and from about 4 months ago my Heckler. I like them as a summer/dry/hard tyre as they roll quite fast and although in winter they do get a bit slippy find its rather predictable.

I do keep thinking of changing to winter tyres or a front/combo but there is always something else that pops up so end up sticking with whats on.

Fired the Ignitor 2.35 around Cmwcarn yesterday and works perfect for those trails. Will be my winter combo I think. I can get more power down through the tyre and wider tyre works very well. I run @25psi front and back so they roll well LUST. I run the HR 2.35 all year its just so good and railing corners and those center nobs give you all the speed you need on hard pack. Maxxis LUST go on off my XT hoops really easy to. The advanatge is a great tyre to but I was finding it a bit too narrow nice tread though. Wider may help as well as I am training for Trans Alp and it is more comfy than 2.1.

They are 2.1 HRs so they are very different from the 2.35s and in my experience not as grippy as the 2.1 Advantages which are much larger.
I have all of those tyres and Adv front Crosmark rear would be my choice for trail centres, put the Ignitors on the rear for woodland stuff. Won of the combos will work in proper mud though.

OK - so; ride report from today having replaced the Ignitor 2.1 on the front for a 2.1 High Roller, keeping the 2.1 Advantage on the rear.

What a difference! Thanks for the advice - it helped a lot, and whilst the HR looks incredible narrow for a 2.1 (is that what you were referring to, cheers_drive?) it worked very well.

I'll chug along like this for a bit and see how things go, but it felt happier in the damp stuff than the previous setup. Is it nearly summer yet?

cheers again.

Sorry for resurrecting my old thread again, but I've fitted a High Roller front, Advantage rear combo (that's worked well on the Anthem for the last few months, thanks very much) to the 456 and it feels weird.

The Advantage on the rear is a folding Exception series but the back feels very sloppy - especially for a hardtail. Could it be tyres or something else? Skewer's tight, wheel and hub are solid, but it feels very odd - especially on the road. If I 'weave' the bike, it feels very unstable - and I can't suss out why...

For Scottish winter riding I run Maxxis Minion DHF 2.35 single wall ST front and Maxxis Ardent 2.25 60a rear. This setup seems pretty fast rolling but has serious amounts of grip in the pish.
