I’ve been running the Mavic Crossmax XL rims & I love them, they make life so flipping easy due to the fact that the spoke doesn’t go through the rim so no need for any rim tape or anything. Only problem is that my new frame is 148 Boost & I don’t really want to blast £800 on another set. Aside from Crank Brothers is there anyone else who offers a similar solution?

Not really an answer to your question, but the Roval wheels on my new specialized use rim rape, but it's pre-installed and I just put tyres on and pumped them up, just like my old mavic UST rims. No difference.

I'm sure you could get a rear Hope/Mavic 8XX (the tubeless ones, whichever suits your needs) for a lot less than £800.

Fulcrum do full UST but they're not a good option for a wheelbuild. Or for a built wheel ime. But still.

Only a couple of companies still flogging the UST dead horse really.

I did not know that there were adapters available to convert to Boost. Absolutely amazing 🙂

Cheers

as note mavic have moved back to tape over holes for new wheels such as XA Elites and Crossmax Elite - still keeps the UST bead shape for snap bead snap in.

Hah, that's actually quite funny. A couple of years back they suddenly started talking about "UST Ready" which is effectively just the same tubeless ready everyone else has been doing for years, and bunged Pinkbike however much it costs to have them write a puff piece, saying about how UST Ready was the only good standard... I thought they'd given up then but then the 821 came out, i guess they're finally moving on.

Tape- lighter than metal, it turns out.

Is it not that you no longer need the special nipple carrier that means the weight difference?

The nipple insert adds about 50g to the rim but Mavic traditionally dealt with this by just not including them in the claimed weights.

(the insert was just one way to do it though, frinstance fulcrum use a UST rim bed but fairly standard nipples- to build the wheel you put a little steel insert into the nipple, then pull it into place through the rim with a magnet. Loads of fun)

I know what you mean by the lack of faff with crossmax of old, great design tubeless with no tape, and went up very easily

however they are made of cheese! and the hubs on them are absolutely shocking with that crap tightening thing you have to do that creak like mad and need tightening every other ride!

that said ive got some gorilla tape, it sticks really well holds tubeless perfect and was 3 quid for a big roll, it takes about 5 mins to install and its that easy and cheap I generally when I swap a new tyre put new tape on, its that quick, its really not much faff at all
