I have a wheel I have had kicking about for a while. Its a Mavic Crossmax XL. Nice wheel but the axle pulls loads from side to side. I think it needs taking up the slack in it as I know you can adjust this with the Mavic wheel hubs. Any idea how to do this? It as like a big silver alloy nut thing with little holes around it on one side of the axle. I presume this is some preload thing? needing a special tool no doubt. I have taken the free hub off and that seems ok, its the axle that needs tightening up to stop it moving side to side.
Its a rear wheel BTW
With the wheel in the frame (or forks) use circlip pliers/needle nose pliers in the holes and turn the ring clockwise to take up any play, don't tighten too much, just enough to remove the play
There is a proper tool but circlip/needle nose pliers work ok
Do you have to have the wheel tight in the frame with the skewer? So there is no lock nuts or anything to loosen off?
Yes, wheel fastened up as normal
