I shouldn't be left alone with a laptop whilst ill! We have about 2.5 weeks free in first half of September. Plan had been to holiday in the UK, but I have just been looking at flights to Vegas (as you do!). Could get out there at £550/pp and then hire a compact RV for 14 night for £1100 (yes, a lot more expensive than a holiday in the UK) and then thinking a self guided tour round Zion, Moab, Grand Canyon for 2 weeks.
Questions:
- Are we best to take our own bikes or hire? Normally on a 2 week holiday we ride for ~10 days and walk the rest.
- Are we restricted to just riding in Moab?
- Are we daft doing it self guided?
- RV sites for a couple of weeks - prices look to be £20-30/night. Any recommendations/things to avoid.
Or any other suggestions?
Also wondered about flying to Portland, OR and doing some west coast stuff. Cheaper option is go to Finale and the Italian coast! Or stay in the UK!
Well, unless you're completely useless with maps, you shouldn't need guiding in Moab. Bike rental is also easy in Moab. Question is, are you wanting to ride other areas?
What Mark said. I'd say most of Moab is do able riding from town. The Whole enchilada uplift is a unmissable day out
I've to been to Moab twice (part of trips that took in CO rather than UT), Porc Rim (the whole enchilada?) was amazing and worth it alone. Slick Rock I didn't like, hey ho.
I've taken my bike both times but it was late both times.... First time by 4 days (don't plan to land I. The US on a Friday). Plus is it's your bike you know how it rides/fits but it's more hassle travelling.
If your not planning riding 'all the time' then why not hire when you need?
I've done stuff self guided, there's usually decent local trail maps available from the LBS's.
MTBR has 'local' pages I'll try find a link for you, join and get advice from people who live there.

I'm watching this with interest as I'm heading out there late September, starting with the Black Hills Expedition in South Dakota, then a week or so of driving and biking. I'm thinking of spending 4-5 days around Moab, and a couple in Fruita.
How hot do you like it? We were hitting 40c in mid October a couple of years ago, kind of knocks the all day rides on the head.
Park City on the lifts and Deer Valley are worth a look (it was in the Peaty vid with Ken Block)
Plenty of other riding. On the RV thing check out Motel prices as you can get a decent car hire and places to stay at decent prices and the distances will fell less.
Sod Europe and the UK - go ride Moab!
Was out a couple years ago (early September) and never ridden anything like it - especially the Whole Enchilada from Burro Pass down. Weather was perfect.
This year we are going again - fly-drive out of Denver and biking at Grand Junction, Moab, Sedona, Durango, Colorado Spring. Also some sight seeing Monument Valley, Paige, Grand Canyon. We'll be there early Sept so see you there 🙂
