Does it matter?
Took my chainring off and now can't remember whether the male or female bit should be on the outside of the bike?

Female on outside, but it doesn't matter.

male (allen/torx) inwards from the outside. Female part with the grooves on the inside.

Doh, just reread and both answers are different lol.
Mine are both 5mm Allen bolt SRAM x0 ones by the way

I was thinking of allen key ones, where they both have hex sockets. If it's the old style then the grooved ones go inside.
