Any tips for making spacers for transporting a road bike in a box to stop crush damage?

Rigid plastic or copper water pipe cut to slightly longer than the dropout width and held in place with the original skewers.

Copper or HDPE plastic pipe, couple of 5 or 6mm 'penny' washers each end on the inboard sides if using copper as it can scratch / mark the inside of the drop-out.
