What’s the go to 2.8-3.0 650b tyres these days? Currently running ground controls tubeless and they have been ok round Cannock, what’s everyone else using? Looking at reviews the bonty xr4 team issue seem to get some great reviews just a bit pricey tbh.
Currently using Nobby Nics in 3.0 flavour and find they are really good but I have XR4 Teams on another (non-Plus) bike and I'll certainly be considering them when it's time to change.
I love my DHF/Rekon combo
Not cheap, but the 2.8 DHF is a beast up front.
You can get them as a set here, which is a few quid cheaper
Aren't the GCs any good?
Surly DW is a fantastic front tyre. It has nice soft rubber on the shoulder knobs, unusual in pus tyres.
I use them on both ends for the winter, then put a NN on the back for summer. It rolls much faster and grips well.
Yep the gc are ok and haven’t had an issue but they are 2 years old now and some wear and tear looking at replacing them. Specialized only do the purgatory controls which are slightly different in the 3.0 the spacing is wider than the gc’s so was trying to see what others are using.

+1 for the Minion DHF / Rekon + combo. As above, not cheap, but loads of grip and reasonably fast rolling too.
Specialized do a 2.8 Butcher Grid. Got a couple in the garage for when the Purgatory Grids wear out on the Ebike.
I'd second the Maxxis plus tyres, I'm running DHF front and Chronicle rear (in 29+ flavour) and they've been great.
I haven't tried the plus version of the XR4, but I've got the normal XR4 Teams on my 650b hardtail, and I've had a few punctures on flinty/rocky trails. Front has 1 repair, and the rear 2. Holding up tubeless still, but I haven't been that impressed with the carcass strength comparef to the WTBs I had before. I hope they've beefed up the plus ones a bit.
I’ve nothing to compare then too but the Rekon f+r on my bike are ace.
I’ve ridden Rekon F&R on my Mojo3 for a year. On my second (cheaper) set. They are a great trail tyre and I’ve no issues with rips including a few trips to BPW and rocky trails. I did swap the rear for a WTB Ranger Tough Carcass for Spain last year and that was definitely a stronger sidewall. A bit heavier and not so compliant.
On my SolarisMax I have a set of Nobby Nic 2.8s. Only use this bike in local woods and FoD but the tyres have been great. Surprisingly good even when it gets a bit muddy.
The DHF looks like a monster. If I were taking the Mojo back to a rocky weeks riding I reckon I’d go for one of those on the front.
Wondering if Minion DHF up front is up for handling in the mud or as a year round tyre and whether or not the tyre profile is squarerer or roundish like the NN.
Also wondering how the Rekon + might handle Rock and if they both run tubeless fine?
That combo in that link above for Minion and Rekon + is pricey no!?
DHF works well for me on wet roots and a bit of slop, definitely better than a 2.8 Nic in goop.
Yes, the link is expensive, but the DHF is often close to 90 euro on it's own, so it's cheaper, as opposed to cheap
Thanks for feedback on the Minion George and I wonder if Durex charge more for larger rubber. ;-d
Having just been watching plus tyre reviews on youtube, and experiencing clipping pedals, I am really wondering which 2.8" tyres have a higher sidewall than the 2.8" Nobby Nics that I am currently running.
I am trying to achieve an increase in BB height to get rid of clipping pedals, cause every little helps... ;-d
I got a pair of vee tyre crown gem 27.5 x 3.0 from eBay for £20 each as they have been mislabelled. They went up tubeless fine and have seemed pretty good so far. They are still available and may be worth a punt.
Often seems to be the case IME that plus tyres show low stock on the majority of websites . . Anybody else noticed this ?

I'm using it all year round, good on pretty much everything short of proper mud and grippy on Peak rock too. Run on a WRB Scraper, I'd say it's less of a rounded out balloon than the NN 2.8 I had before, more like a scaled up, in proportion 2.5 Minion DHF.

I find it fine on rock, I think Maxxis has its rubber compounds dialled fwiw and I'm running tubeless no problems. The sidewalls are a bit more robust than the Schwalbe and standard weight WTB ones, not as tough as a WTB TCS Tough carcasse though. I tend to run slightly higher than optimum pressures these days as I got fed up with fixing pinch flats on tubeless plus-sized tyres.
Are nobby nics vood front and rear. Just they are so cheap at 20 quid at bike discount de in evo ts 2.8 version
I purchased a magic Mary 2.8 addix soft compound this weekend in the hope it would convert me to plus tyres. It’s a great tyre super grippy and the best + front I have used. Sadly plus tyres are not for me so if anyone wants a used once one drop me a Pm
Wtb bridger 3.0 are noticeably taller than 2.8 dhf or dhr, but they are proper ditch finders on anything damp.
I've just gone from a 2.8" NN on the front to a 2.6" MM and the bike is transformed. I now have confidence in the front end. The NN was always very wishy-washy and I had more unscheduled dismounts caused by losing the front in the last 4 months than the previous 4 years!
NN/RR combo that came on the bike are perfect for me in everything other than slop.
