Magura MT5 pad replacement wtf

Four pot, dead good,  really like them, anyway I've been having a complete brain fart in trying to refit new pads, the joined double ones with hooks. First one snaps into place (magnetic), however to fit the second pad it appears it has to slide down the slot the brake disc would occupy before snapping back snug to the pistons, there's not enough space. I'm sure I fitted the one's that came off but can't for the life of me remember how, anyone?

Push pistons back in.

There is also a 4 separate pad version of the pads which IMO are better. I prefer that compound and they are easier to fit.

It is a bit of a pain but you have to really make sure the pistons are fully pushed in. Even then it can be tight.

@mucker there was a bloke at GT on Saturday with the same Magura brakes having pad replacement issues… borrowed a set of pliers at the bottom of Spooky. Not you by any chance?

I had a ****ing mare with some recently, even filed down the tabs but they weren't going in. Actually I did get it in eventually, but I'd cut the tabs off and forced them in. I decided I didn't fancy that whilst on the trail, so binned those ones and bought the four separate ones instead. Much easier!

I've fitted others before that just slid in nicely, so no idea what the issue was...

After market pads with poor tolerance ie too thick or slightly oversized backing plates?

You need to be careful if going down the 4 pad route to ensure you have the mounting pins/screws as some pads aren't supplied with them.

I've had this too the joined up pads are a pita. Only buy the individual pads now!

OEM pads for the win there as they do come with them.

I think the bloke swearing at his Maguras with the bike upside down and pads out at the bottom of Spooky Woods on Saturday would disagree! Borrowed my pliers. Story sounded familiar to your post 😀

Yeah, mine didn't come with screws so ordered some seperatley and used a small bit of spoke bent at each end as a temporary fix!

Yeah, that was another thing I did, file down the pad material. OEM pads are sooo expensive....

I gave up with the joined pads. Found "Aztec" ones from cycle store I think too thick. Now use Uberbike Race Matrix individuals and they are the right width and seem to offer good performance. I still think it's magic when the magnet captures them in the caliper 🙂

You're not joking. I picked up two OEM packs of (four) pads for my MT7 at my LBS, and the pads were more expensive than a new Shimano SLX brake set!

I told them to forget it and I picked up some cheap mail-order non-Magura pads instead...

If these replacement pads turn out to be shit, I'm gonna ditch the Maguras and switch to something with a better availability of pads (ie Shimano)
