I've just got some magura menja forks second hand and the seals are
leaking a bit. I've heard you can fit fox seals (of which I have a
spare pair in the shed), which I'm willing to try. Problem is, how
do you get the legs off? There's a bolt on one leg, which comes out
no problem, but on the other leg there's the red rebound adjustment
dial which has no obvious way of being removed. What should I do to get
the lowers off, so I can get at the inside of the seals?
If the fox seals don't fit, I still want to get in there and replace
the seal oil and make sure it's all clean. Then I can order some
magura seals from somewhere - recommendations? They don't seem to exist
on UK bike sites.
Cheers.
Ah, you just yank the red dial off! Right, got the legs off. How do you
get the seals out?
Cheers.
The forum on the magura website is very quick and useful - as is picking up the phone to them in Ashby. 01530 414142.
But if you pour out what's in the fork, give them a wipe and stick 10ml (or is it 20ml?)of 30wt oil into each leg that should be fine. They need topping up on a regular basis as the idea is the stanchions should stay oiled. Which might be why you think the seals are leaky.
Success. Use an 18mm spanner to prise out the old seals. Cleaned up
the inside of the legs, push in fox seals, insert sponges, apply fork
fluid to each sponge, re-assemble, top up oil. Put some air in the fork,
took it for a spin, it's definitely better - smoother and the seals look
better seated.
BigJohn: true, they should stay lubricated with a film, but these
had waves of oil running down the stanchion when the bike was left
upside down overnight. I've got fox forks, I know the difference between
leaking and normal operation! 🙂
Cheers.
i need to do this to mine, what fork oil and which seals did you use?
why did you not just use magura seals?
Pinches: I have all the bits for my fox fork, so I just used those fluids and seals. 10wt fox suspension fluid, fox float fluid.
ROFL Harris: Haven't got any, and nowhere seems to sell them. I already
had a fox seal kit and, to be honest, they look identical.
I get my fox bits from mojo.co.uk. Have yet to find anywhere that sell
magura bits. I've had a fox fork for 2.5 years, a magura fork for 4 days,
so my magura knowledge is lacking. Having taken the fork apart and
cleaned it, it's 99% the same as a fox fork. I guess they're all the same.
Cheers.
Hi, any update on this fork? Everything still cool with it? I am in the same situation with my 2009 Menja now (new, but old stock), having quite a bit of oil coming from the seals.
Thanks
