I've bled these before with no issues.

I recently replaced the lever - it seems to be functioning ok.

Now as i'm trying to bleed the system (syringe full of fluid fitted to caliper and reservoir cover off - pistons returned) i can't physically push the fluid throught the caliper towards the reservoir as its just meeting total resistance.

do it the other way first- pump it down from the lever to the caliper?

have you fitted the bleed nipple properly to the caliper?

I thought it suggested kind of going 'both ways - up from bottom first (ie. push syringe) and then pulling it back through from top (i.e. pull syringe)?

Just suggesting you start using the syringe on suck first rather than blow?

You'd be no worse off...

just fitted an empty syringe to caliper and sucked = just creates a vaccum and no fluid movment through the system 🙁

Exactly qwerty. But you don't have to remove the cover though? Is there not just the small screw at the bottom (middle) of the cover as on the pic below ? Thats where to put the syringe that has no piston, just the chamber.

do the pistons move if you replace the bleed port blanking screw and push the lever?

It sounds like your Master cylinder piston is stuck down, quite possible if it's a second hand lever that it's been used with the wrong fluid and the seals have expanded.

Try winding the lever adjuster screw completely out(anti-clockwise).This moves the piston back past the oil top up hole and opens the system up for bleeding.

no i've got an older version

do the pistons move if you replace the bleed port blanking screw and push the lever?

they did before i fitted a new lever

new lever and correct fluid

Try winding the lever adjuster screw completely out(anti-clockwise).This moves the piston back past the oil top up hole and opens the system up for bleeding.

tried this to no avail

cheers for all the replies. i'm wondering if a small foreign body has blocked the system somewhere. i may disconnect the hose from lever and caliper and blast out with disc cleaner, and see what happens

keep your ideas coming though

Does the lever actuate the piston or is the piston stuck?

you mean the little piston that the lever pushes against ? if so, yes

the caliper pistions worked fine before all this

Its definetely the port blocked,by either the piston or debris,if you take the lever cover off can you see the piston move back past the hole.

In order to change the lever you have to lock the piston in the reservoir assembly down with a tiny allen key through a hole in the lever body before extracting the old lever. It can be a real struggle to get the piston far enough down to get the allen key in. Have you damaged the piston in the process?

if you don't do this something heinous happens to the piston. I can't remember where I found this out, I don't think it's in the manual. I might just have had a bad feeling about doing it another way, or seen the hole and, being a man, decided something should be stuck in it amid much sweating and shouting 😀 anyway it worked...

seemed easy to put the 2mm allen key in position - i'll inspect for damage tomorrow

i'll have another bash tomorrow, cheers for replies

just an update - i checked out all the above ideas and couldn't find the cause of the problem

curiosity, caffine and meddling got the better of me and i (having read the magura warnings on doing so) accidently popped the lever end piston out and borked it totally 😕

so in desperation i've created a lesbian brake out of a louiseFR lever and marta caliper (the FRs had calipers too big for my 180f/160r combo)

garden tests = it seems to work, the lever moves a good way before making pad contact and does pull closer to the bar than it probably should, i'll get it all up and running later with the new pads run in and see if it works on the trail 😉
