Possibly Iโm missing something, but why ride fixed on the road, when a single speed with brakes would ride the same in the general โgoing forwardsโ sense, but be so much better in the โstopping or slowing downโ sense.
edit- not even sure about โmad skillsโ ?
it just looks they have developed a really clumsy way to use the wrong tool to almost achieve badly, what the right tool can do far better and far easier.
Fixed, fine. But would it really be so terrible to get some proper brakes?
(Was the one where he passes a motorbike just before a sharp left-hand corner the descent into Port de Sรณller on Mallorca?)
bunch of pricks
Because hipster
You have to admit that the panda onesie and goggles is a strong look though.
Where are the mad skills?ย Just skidding a bike on the road is hardly skillfull.ย Even I can do it
Gotta love the way he rides in front of the motorbike then starts skidding. Dickhead.
Show us then TJ! ๐

Because fixed feels better. ย SS just seems like a drag on the road whereas fixed gear doesn't. ย Same off road of me. ย Not needing any brakes is a bonus as even less maintenance

You need brakes. Or a good dental plan.
Skids are for kids. And ****s in pyjamas, too, apparently.
*cant believe **** is filtered. ****s.
They must get through some back tyres 😳 and if they keep that up one of them is going to end up as a radiator rabbit on a Scania...
Young man's knees skidding fixed like that, shortly to become old man's knees.
Suspect modest metres of development on display, though, it's hard skidding a grown-ups gear fixed.
I couldn't stop laughing , until I switched off
KIerly - without brakes you are braking the law and would be liable in the event of a collision - see the young chap in london who got jailed.
Can I be permitted to give y'all a gentle reminder that while we're all tutting and rolling our eyes at this foolish behaviour, a million more people are doing the same about us riding off-road, or even us riding bikes at all..
Why do we have to whizz through the hills and streets on our infernal contraptions, why can't we all use cycle lanes or drive everywhere, or catch a bloody bus like decent folk.
Next time it could be a child's face!
You need brakes.
The law says you do but there are certainly people out there can ride just fine without.
Drifting on a fixie is one of the finest feelings cycling has to offer.
The law says you do but there are certainly people out there can ride just fine without.
Yep, plus you actually have a brake anyway. ย The only time I would question it is if the road is wet as stopping distance is too long at any decent speed.
Small emergency front brake would just seem sensible on the road. You donโt know when someone else is going to do something daft; and itโs not as if the technology isnโt available or sufficiently blingy. And as for the low maintenance argument; if you donโt use it, it wonโt wear out, will it?
a front brake provides most if not all of your stopping power.ย rear braking only is dangerous.ย You simply cannot stop as quickly as you could with a front brake.ย Basic physics.
Read up on the chap who was jailed in Londonย thats why he was jailed because with working brakes he could have stopped in time to avoid the pedestrian.
anyone who thinks a fixie can brake properly without a front brake is kidding themselves and is a dangerous idiot.
Iโm not sure Iโve seen anything as idiotic as that for some time...

This ^^
There are old fixie riders, and bold fixie riders. But there are no old, bold fixie riders!

I don't think thus is true. He was jailed because he was a gobby shite and cyclsts are viewed as vermin in the UK. The braking distance info was complete flawed and his lawyer was a useless prick for not getting it thrown out of court
Having said which, I completely agree with your point that a front brake is good. If only to avoid a prison sentence.
If any more proof was needed that a brakeless fixie can't slow down or stop effectively then the idiots on that video have provided it.
That was such a fun video, thanks for sharing. I loved Lucas Brunelle in the mid 2000s and I love that.
I loved Lucas Brunelle in the mid 2000s and I love that.
The idiot that killed a woman in London on his brakeless fixie was inspired by Lucas Brunelle apparently.
Who cares about their personal safety - it's their choice.
However swerving and skidding towards other people like means they should burn in hell.

I have a feeling the woman he hit being inconsiderate and dying might have had just a tiny influence too.
Annoying pricks
Dicks I have absolutely nothing in common with.
Anyone riding without at least a front brake on the road is a cretin of the first order.
Skids are skillz? Since when?

I'm so old. ๐
Skids are skillz? Since when?
Depends on the definition of skillz really. Skids are usually viewed with contempt by old and/or boring people. This makes skids cool.
If the old, boring people of stw really want to make change here, the approach should be to pretend that skids are teh awsums. Once da youth see a few red-faced mamils in full team sky kit laying down some big steezy lines of rubber, it'll be much cooler to slow down without breaking traction.

Its less of an issue offroad but onroad onroad where the differemce in speed up hills and along flats really require different gears so a gear that gets uou up most hills will have you spinning like a dafty on the flat then coasting as you can nonlonger pedal smoothly at the cadence required. With the fixed gear i find you can generally maintain a much higher cadence as it helps your feet round the awkward dead spots.
I'm a front braker but generally control speed with my feet. I did however achieve an epic skid in starbeck in the pouring rain down a sweet hill towards a level crossing passed all the queued cars.
They weren't ald fixed gears in that video anyway. There were full on road bikes too.
Fully agree that you can not stop on a brakeless fixed gear as quickly as a bike with a front brake. ย That doesn't mean you cannot stop quickly though. ย For example I could probably stop more quickly that I could when I used to ride a 1950s Raleigh town bike with rod brakes as my commuter many years ago which was fully legal by the way.
It really is about where you ride. ย I would not be weaving in an out of cars going down hills with traffic or riding through a town with no brakes. ย However, I have been riding around the New Forest for 10 years and have not once needed to stop more quickly that I can on my brakeless fixed gear.

I've been driving 10 years and I've never needed a seatbelt. Can't work out why they're mandatory.
