I've had 2016 RCT3s Lyriks? for the past 2 years and they've been pretty solid apart from going back with a CSU issue. I've got a new bike coming with the 2018 version but other than the climb switch being easier to operate I havent heard anything about new tech in them. I find that they blow through the travel quite easy when ridden hard. 90% of the time they are great 10% they dive too much with 90psi and 2 tokens. (I'm 13 stone).
So I'm thinking of going to 36's with Grip2 and selling the lyriks that come whilst they are still brand new. However I've not been on 36's for a couple of years - has anyone got any real world experience on them?
Are they the RC2 version? If i recall correctly they won in a shootout agains the fox equivalent.
Not sure - they are coming on a 2018 xx1 nomad - i'll check but I think the rc2 are 2019s though?
I thought Grip2 replaced RC2 for 2019? Regardless it's an expensive change, can you not negotiate a deal with the shop?
Fox have the Grip2 damper for 2019, Rock Shox have a R2C2.
FWIW, the Grip2 36 is epic.
Interestingly the RC2 air shaft is only < £50... could be worth a go but a used lyrik is going to sell for less than a new one... but the review I just read did sound promising addressing some of the issues I mentioned above.

Your 2018 fork will have either the RCT3 Charger2 damper or the RC Charger2 damper.
For 2019 they have released the RC2 Charger2 damper. The difference between the dampers is the RCT3 has a 3 position threshold adjuster and low speed compression adjustment in the open position, the RC Charger2 damper has low speed compression adjustment and the RC2 Charger2 damper has a 5 position high speed compression adjuster and a low speed compression adjuster.
The 2019 fork also has a new debonair air spring which provides even greater small bump sensitivity and mid stroke support.
Having extensive time on the RC2 Lyrik and the Grip2 Factory fork I feel I can compare both pretty well. The Grip2 is definitely more stingy with the travel, it holds you up more in the mid stroke and the last inch of travel is harder to use than the Lyrik, its not as plush initially than the lyrik but then making progress its very very controlled in its action. The Lyrik is really nice to ride but it does sit deeper into its travel and doesn't hold you us as well in the mid stroke. I am considering removing the debonair spring and fitting a luftkappe on the old air shaft to see if that improves things. No matter what I do with the debonair spring it just sits a bit too low and feels wrong.
I have since added a Luftkappe into the 36 and now its as plush as the Lyrik in the initial stroke but more composed through its travel.

I think it’s about £40 for the 2019 debonair air shaft - I got one recently from j tech. I can’t fully comment on it effectiveness vs the old one as I also swapped from moco (my fork started life as a yari) to a charger 2 and out in new skf seals at the same time.
Think the luftkappe is about £65 and gives you a bigger negative spring but a smaller positive spring. So it should be easier again to get it moving, but it’ll ramp up more / quicker. This may give you more mid stroke support than the 2019 debonair shaft if hats what you like. The 2019 shaft gets some of its extra negative spring volume by using the space on the inside of the shaft from what I’ve read.
The fork is very plush and keen to get moco into its travel, but I’ve not given it more than a local ride at the moment. It’s a lot better than the Yari so far but I’ve never ridden a 36.
I’ve got 2 tokens in it so far and I think I’ve got around 85psi in it (I’m 12 stone). Only s couple of clicks on rebound from the fastest setting and no lsc dialled in yet. On a local play I couldn’t quite work out if lsc was making much difference - although if I used the 2 former settings on the rct3 dial you could feel a noticeable difference.
Just a thought - but could you run mrp ramp control with either a 2019 air spring or a luftkappe? Might give you the very plush breakaway and then really fine tuning of the air spring ramp up / progression.
I would say that whatever you get, pop a Luftkappe in there.
I've a 2017 RCT3 Lyrik set to 170mm (and a 2016 RCT3 Pike set to 150mm). For me, the stock versions of both lacked midstroke support when set a PSI where sag was about right and small bump sensitivity was what I wanted. Luftkappe fixed this as I'm now able to get the same small bump sensitivity at a higher PSI than the stock forks. Sag is still ballpark correct.
both forks are now pretty much perfect for me, certainly not worth chucking Fox 36 money at it for something that might not be any better. Running 0 tokens in both.
Interesting, wish I'd tried to luftkappe earlier but I'd forgotten about it to be honest. (I think it was possibly because they have to make the forks 160mm not 170?) which isn't really an option on a nomad4 - but I'll look again as I could be wrong.
**edit - just checked you cant run a luftkappe with a mrp at 170mm that was the issue.
I'm running 2 tokens currently. The problem is with that much air I find it very rare that I bottom out maybe twice a day in the Alps or Golfie at full chat but it's a compromise to keep the forks higher in their travel. I dont even bother looking at sag PSI at the moment as it's too soft when ridden hard.
The MRP addition is also something I forgot about - that could be the gem for remembering a couple of clicks for different track types.. however you'd probably need to adjust the rebound by a click or 2 if adjusting the MRP I'd imagine?
Maybe I'm best saving my cash anyway and just going down a PUSH setup. I think the 36's will end up costing me about £300 once traded for lyriks so debatable if thats a worthy upgrade for a fork with no warranty.
Can you put the charge2 rc2 damper in a pike?
