Right, changed the cable to my rear mech last night but the wee red thingy that tells you what gear you're in (NB: possibly not actual terminology!) no longer moves. Have I made some elementary error here? I've changed cables before and have never had this problem, so I'm a bit stumped.

Pretty doubtful that it's anything that you've done just by changing the cable as it's operated by a small peg under the window housing, nowhere near the cable routing.

Take the window off and see if its jammed? Its only held on by 2 screws. Just make sure when you put i back on your in 9th (or smallest sprocket)

assuming you gears are working... then as per bigyinn, it looks complitcated but went back together surprisingly easy...
