I'm interested in converting my HID light to an LED system. I found this topic: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/lumicycle-hid-cutter-led-conversion-tell-me-how in the forum but its now locked.
Has anyone had a go at making this conversion subsequently and if so is there a kit list and or instructions?
I see that in the old topic most parts were sourced from Cutter in Australia, is there now a more convenient UK supplier?
Thanks in advance!
yip, it was my post and if you give me abit of time I should be able to dig out a later 'how to set of words and piccies.
Cutter ae the only ones unless Troutie has some spare ones.
Mail me (email in profile) and i'll sort you the instructions out.
Thanks very much for the prompt reply!
I've sent you an email, although it might turn up in your junk folder since I have an unusual email address (mostly numbers).
I'm really looking forward to making the switch over, not being able to do any night rides at the moment is killing me!
Thanks again.
did mine after being inspired by vortexracing's post. thanks vortexracing!
i used the triple xpg kit from cutter, which includes the 3 led pcb and the b2flex driver.
vortex kindly sent me a drawing of the insert he machined but some dimensions were off for my housing - think these went through a couple of iterations, so you'll need to check the ID of the Lumi Head unit you have before machining yours.
other points to note:
you can bond the LED board to your heatsink if you want to, but i just drilled through the PCB ( keeping away from the tracks! ), and screwed the thing down with some heatsink jizz under.
the flex driver is on a later version and the instructions for it are not specific for the version number, but don't worry about it - it all works the same ( or seems to ).
snip down the legs of the optic to fit the 'shoulders' down to the LED pcb ( you'll see what this means when you get it ).
the instructions for programming the driver don't read terribly well IMO. just make a list of the features you think you want, and then you can look up how to get there with the button pushes, and write this out too.
if you're using a nimh battery pack you'll want to change the cut-off voltage setting on the driver, which by default is setup for li-ion. as i found out the other night when i used a spare nimh instead of my li-ion pack for the first time. ๐
i'm going to set 1V per cell, which for a lumi pack is 11.0. you can apparently go as low as 0.8V per cell but i have plenty of capacity for the rides i do and want to keep the pack going for as long as i can.
i'm really pleased with the results. i'm running 3 levels, with 1500mA the highest, which i just flick on for fast downhill bits, then shut down again, as i haven't yet bothered to heatsink the driver and i don't want it getting too hot. when i get around to it i'll crack it all open and bond the diver in place with some more metal to heatsink it.
it's a very worthwhile conversion. good luck.
I too have one. I had to rebuild mine lest year after knocking the dome off one of the original XPE LEDs when I was changing the lens over. It now has a 4 XPG set up from cutter. I bought a medium and narrow optic, I much prefer the narrow although it is still quite "floody". I run mine at 1.2 amps and only occasionally run it on full.
I don't know if it was the lens being shorter for the quad set up or the lens being shorter for the XPG LEDs but I had to make up a spacer to make it a tight fit on my heatsink in the body.
The quad set up is immensely bright, although it does cause the heat protection circuit to cut in if I am riding slow technical singletrack on top setting.
Overall a fantastic light well worth the effort of building. The only problem with mine is that it is blue and the bike is red!!

Good job I did a search before I posted this same question. My Lumi HID has started to flicker when it gets bumpy, so reckon it's on its way out.
Vortex, I'll pm you my email, can you send an instruction to me too please.
And can someone tell me exactly what I need to buy from Cutter please. I think I need a driver B2flex? Triple LED mounted on a board? should I get a quad? Switch from Maplins? I've got cable. Some of that heatsink paste stuff from Maplins? Get a heatsink turned up? What about "optics"? Is that the lens, and if so, which one do I need? I've got the 5.5 hour HID battery so it should last a while with the LEDs ๐
I'm pretty handy so should be able to knock this together, but I'm a bit dense when when I read the techy terminology.
will do
got your mail
and the instructions are on their way

I've done a conversion with much help from Dave.
cheers bruneep was just about to re-post the instructions.
yours still working OK?
Does anyone have any spare LED boards and optics lying around?
I converted my Lumi halogen can to LED a few years back and have got most of the bits including the heatsink shown in the HID conversion thread(purchased from Vortexracing ๐ ), just haven't got around to doing it yet.
Might have a quad and optic in the garage.
Mail me and I'll see what I have .
cheers
Dave
Yes still going strong.
I have converted 2 lamps with CRE XPEs and Bflex uin2 and found this website useful TASKLED. The operating manual for the b2flex is at the following [link].
