Considering a couple of options at the moment - 456 / mmmbop sort of thing. How important are travel adjust forks to get the best out of these for point-to-point (i.e. not just downhill) riding?
Only on badly designed ones.

Neither of the above then?
travel adjust is pointless imo
I've run lots of different forks on my Soul over the years and it's been good with both fixed 100mm or 125mm forks or with Travel adjust Talas.
I don't think the Soul really needs travel adjust however I find the U-turn useful on the Pikes fitted to my Enduro.
Even on exceptionally well designed blue piggy ones, long alpine climbs are more comfortable with the forks wound down a few clicks. For a blast round a trail centre, don't bother.
140mm forks like revs work great on a 456, no need at all to change travel at that length
Had a set on my 456 and on my ragley . Waste of time as I never touched them at all.
If you prefer to ride rather then walk up long technical climbs, it is nice to be able to wind down your forks. I have 110-140mm on my hardtail, and the difference in climbing ability is huge.
I rarely change the travel on mine 140 Thors on a Chameleon. If the climb is techy I just turn off the compression damping
not necessary, though I tend to buy travel adjust as a matter of course for their versatility - more likely to be able to swap between frames when the mood takes you.
