cheeky day out (well with gf on footpaths) *Sunday
through the forest, dapple everywhere, so mellow as to be like a toking session, down, via the victorian (??) cast iron 5 bar gate with the oldest 'horse' pull I've ever seen to the disused church (where I was delighted to see a solitary poppy cross at the foot of the 1st WW memorial), then down across open horse and sheep filled fields to the river, over the old sluice gates (original ornament still attached), the millenium salmon runner, past the mill over the canal and into the tree tunnel. Then back onto the canal, where convenietly a 'cafe' was doing alfresco bacon butties and brekkies, eating in the sunshine, canal again, looping back over the footbridge to via the fishing trail (*all fishermen smiling and saying hallo as usual) over the railway on the footpath, horn goes on a fast train - we've just crossed and are standing by the corrugated gate next to the line, through the local village and back along the canal, up a foopath onto back roads and home, a glorious morning, and then I mowed the lawn - ho hum .......
certainly didn't. First ride round Surrey Hills for 18 months. Beautiful. One of the best things about mountain biking is it gets you out on days like today ๐
I wrote this yesterday on Bike and Bivi:
Hi,
I set off to from my house this morning with the trusty steed fully loaded to catch the train from Workington to Foxfield. The plan was to bike from Foxfield to Staveley, camp, then ride back home via Windermere, Ambleside etc. The closer I got to Workington I realised I wasn't going to make the train! Mad dash to Harrington, the next station...saw the train going over the bridge, argghh. Nevermind I thought, I decided to follow any path I could along the West Coast. Whitehaven, Sandwith, St. Bees, Braystones, main road to Gosforth, Santon Bridge, Birker Fell (you bar steward!), Ulpha, Broughton in Furness...do I head to Coniston and camp or head for Foxfield to catch the train to Workington? Legs are shot, can't imagine doing the same distance or more tomorrow. FI, Foxfield it is! I'm in the Prince of Wales pub, 3 pints inside me, sat in the corner with a 1000yd stare as I write this. Catching the train in 10mins and a mate is picking me up from Workington...pleased and sick with equal measure!
Better luck next time, eh?
I forgot to say that I had still thought about camping and doing a shorter ride the next day instead (Broughton Moor and Seathwaite). The problem was that there wasn't the train I wanted on a Sunday (any excuse!).
Over 80k done with over 5hrs riding. I'd set off at 9.50am, had a few stops for food and got to Foxfield just after 4pm.

Glorious day out in the Beacons, riding the Gap. Fitness! is very slowly returning but the Bryoer tramway was seriously hard work- damp and slippery. I was wearing a (now rather crumpled) poppy and I paused at 11:00, looking out over the hills. Thank you boys.
The sun shone all day, the Gap climb breezed by but the rocky descent is not yet showing any signs of returning to its previous self. It is so loose that it will possibly drain too, so the usual winter glacier might not form there either. Not good. Lower down was super fast and uber splashy.
The bridleway at the top of the tarmac has been cut back ๐ and now you can see what you are doing ๐ฏ Perhaps this is why I stalled and fell so many times. Great fun though. All in all, a good day out. Mid- November, shorts and shirt. If this is global warming, bring it on.
Waves at fellow Cymru residents ๐
It's beautiful here at the moment isn't it! The moors were glowing with that wonderful golden warm hue as the sun was going down yesterday. And the weather this October and November has been fab - hope it just changes to lovely crisp snow without any of that pesky rain business in between. Living in Snowdonia rocks ๐
Couldn't be arsed driving somewhere, so I rode the park, open spaces, bridleways, old tube lines & country lanes of North London (yes they do exist)and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sue- I'm hoping to make it to Fachwen sometime soon, fancy showing someone from De Gymru around?
I Went for a twenty minute spin on my bike today.First time on my bike for 8 weeks as i crashed off my bike and sustained a tibia plateu fracture.Still on crutches at the moment but needed to go for a quick spin. Will be a while untill i can properly ride though, but looking forward to the challenge.Oh and I have two metal plates holding my bone together!!
Nope just getting over Bronchitis so hidden away in the warmth.
Gutted.
Ambrose - be more than happy to, as long as you don't mind that I'm in the "enthusistic but not very fast or technically competant" category ๐ Stick a post up when you're in the area.
*thread hi-jack* - Grantway: I'm meeting Elf and Plumber for curry and beer on Monday evening if you fancy joining us? *end thread hi-jack*
Not wasted:
8th round in the Swedish cyclocross cup yesterday, 13th place. Swedish cycloross championships today, 19th place.
Great weather, dry but around +5 degrees, perfect with a little embrocation.
Drove 400 miles today. Beautiful weather for it but would have preferred to be on the bike. Or bikes.
Did 25 miles around Haldon (a lot more interesting when it's been pi$$ing down for days) then made pink cap cakes with Mrs and Mini jruk. Very cool day.
23 miles on a circuit from Staveley big climb up to Nan Bield then a grassy hairy descent down to Troutbeck big off ripping out both brake hoses and pringerling my front wheel unable to do much now beer and Sunday lunch plus pain killers have worn off

Not wasted.
We watched our twin girls take part with the rest of the beaver pack in the remembrance parade in our village.
Me and my brother took our dad out on his new mtb for a ride round our local trails, got his bike proper sh*t up ๐ Dogs enjoyed the run too.
Then went out again on my own this afternoon for another few miles.
Feeling good!
I had an epic day rediscovering flying solo, phoning my mum, doing some bad plastering, training for the Paris marathon, selling a lot of crap on ebay, having a nap, cooking yummy food and winding up a yam yam.
Still some of the day left.
I didn't waste any of it painstakingly photographing myself...
Short flat and fast blast round the Sherwood area.
didn't waste any of it painstakingly photographing myself
Thank goodness for small mercies
Uplift at Innerleithen today. Great day.
I didn't get out on my bike, but I had a great day taking my dog for a long walk, (I'd go out with using a bike but he pulls up lame in 5 mins flat due to genetic problems) Then this afternoon I took my father in law to the remembrance service. we had great weather and marched through our local town.
All in all a fantastic November day.
postierich - amazing pics. Glad the garmin survived the big off.
I wasted it in bed with a hangover ๐ณ
Hugor, buy shimano! Ive seen that happen on many of their cassettes.
RD what do you mean? Mine would be awesome!
Another spin around crowthorn Gorrick course with the boys and some fire track in the dark.
Rode my daughters 14" wheel 'ballerina' bike for a few hundred yards when I could no longer be arsed to drag it. Really light and easy to flick about - and fully rigid ๐
Both days over the weekend were amazing around here. Didn't waste them, 3.5 hours on the MTB on Saturday, first 1.5hrs around Chicksands with the Go-ride club I take, then off to Brickhill/Woburn to meet a mate, for 2hrs. Jnr did both too and ended up a bit knackered!
Then yesterday Jnr and I both raced CX, the OH took Jnr home so I rode the 12 miles back as a warm down. Cracking stuff.
No biking for me.
Bought new walking boots (Alt-Bergs :-)), had a bonfire, went to Remberance Service and to a 3-yr old's birthday party.
I had a good weekend ๐
8 of us popped over to Thetford for some old fashioned XC, did a couple of loops of the Red trail, sun was out, very warm, forest was lovely and ride was a good blast.
Then coffee and bacon butties after, sat outside in the sun. We actually got bothered by a Wasp in mid November, freaky weather.
For once I did not waste it - I went on a truly gobsmacking ride involving a cheeky but epic trail...
Wasted doing bloody DIY that i was meant to do Saturday but because Mrs was ill ended up taking her mother shopping instead!!! ๐
Saturday was lovely - spent it playing around at Stainburn till I snapped my chain, realised we had no quicklinks between us and it was going to get dark soon.
Sunday spun out 26 miles on the roadie to my parents for unhealthy food. I blame increased (ie some) road riding for snapping the chain. It's making me fitterer.
bloody hell postierich, braided hoses too. How did you manage that?
Wasted it ๐ too tired, did a bit too much during the week (commutings good and all but it shouldn't impinge on weekend riding) Did take the eldest to the park tho so not a complete write off.
