"Losing" Di2 cables...

"Losing" Di2 cables down a seat tube. Is this a thing?

I read somewhere on the internet that you can "lose" a Di2 cable down the seat tube when you remove the seat post and it seems plausible.

So, does anyone have any tips for securing the cable and/or retrieving the cable if it does slide down seat tube??

(For context, I'm flying with the bike and the seat post needs removing to fit in bike box. And then it may need to be removed and refitted multiple times to fit into whichever hire car Avis provide me)

Electrical tape the wire to the frame whilst in transit

If it does fall down the seat tube then have a long J bend spoke to hand to hook it out again

Always worked for me

I guess the di2 cable is clipped to the battery in the seat tube and to the junction box whenever you’ve put that - mine is floating in the downtube just in front of the bb. When you pull the seatpost out it’s probably likely it’s going to unclip from the battery easier than the junction box due to the various angles involved - so I’d be prepared to take the bb out and have a fish around for the loose wire (unless your bike has a big enough ‘window’ under the bb area to get away with leaving the bb in

Good idea.👍

My battery lives inside the seatpost itself, so when I remove the seatpost, out comes the battery as well

My battery is jammed tight into the seatpost with a di2 battery adapter thing - it isn’t coming without a pull on the actual battery itself. So if I pull the seatpost out now it’s coming complete with battery. May come with a wire / may not. Unless your battery wire is really long - then you might have enough slack to pull the post out with it still attached at both ends?

I built my di2 myself - individually picking up the wire lengths I needed. So maybe my setup isn’t ideal…

If you have enough slack in the cable you should be able to remove the seatpost without pulling on the connection...if you're not sure just go easy the first time...then disconnect and tape the wire to the frame as above.

Take a spare di2 cable on holiday with you as well. I refitted mine after a flight and the cable got caught in a void between the seatpost and seat stay, then got crushed when the seat post went back in. Disaster

I'd be f+++ed if that happened to me as my bike came with everything pre-installed and I have no idea what length cables are used or where the connections are. Definitely a bike shop job...so I'll make sure I'm very careful!

Dont forget to take the charger!

If the bike gets lent on something whilst in transit and one of the shifter buttons is pressed down it could drain the battery down as it will keep trying to shift (if you dont end up removing the seatpost and disconnecting the battery for transit purposes)

TBH I think the whole putting the battery in the post is a bit of a nightmare.

The advice for building up a 3t exploro was to wrap it in foam and pop in the down tube, then any seatpost fiddling doesn’t affect it and after doing it both ways I’ve found this to be the least painful approach.

I’ve heard of this happening.
