I've been planning an overnighter starting from Pitlochry or thereabouts, heading to Tyndrum, and back the next day. Currently considering going to Carie and over what I think is called Kirk Road towards Innerwick, then round Loch Lyon to the WHW and down to Tyndrum. Second day probably heading back via Killin and back roads (though open to suggestions).
Overall, there's probably a fair amount of road work, so I'd prefer to take my gravel bike. But will the off road bits be doable/vaguely enjoyable on it, or do they really need an MTB? Is it steep enough to warrant MTB gearing? If so, might plan it more as an out and back to include more off road.
Anyone local or ridden lately? Probably looking around late August so unclear if conditions will still be reasonably dry or not.
Plenty of people do it on gravel bikes, I think I saw about 8 of them when I did it on my mtb. It's not technical, but it is a bit loose in places. The climb out of rannoch is gentler than the loch Lyon side.
You'd probably be fine on a gravel bike with wide (40mm+) tyres.
Have a look at the Rob Roy Way between Killin and Pitlochry.
