Great stuff and a really interesting read. It certainly highlights the cultural dominance of the 'white' story: so many cultural and social narratives of this period are focused on white men on horses. It's not surprising that the bicycle was seen as a poor substitute to the horse, and that African-Americans soldiers were chosen for the troop. So interesting to read how well they fared over difficult terrain, their speed, and the kit list.
