So having split my right shin open yet-a-bleeding-gain, I'm thinking I need to start covering my legs up a bit more. Currently wear 661 Kyle Strait kneepads, but they obviously don't cut the mustard on the shin front. I also have a pair of 661 pro leg pads, but they're bloody awful to pedal any distance in. I want something that I can ride in for 6+ hours in all weathers without them pissing me off.

Has anybody tried the 661 Rampages? Look the right kind of idea (a longer KS). Only one strap though (round the top), so I'm not sure how well they'll stay put on the bits of spaghetti that pass for my legs.

Thanks!

Don't G-Form do a shin thing? They look nice and are available from our friends in the North at The Bike Chain.

I have the g-form shin things. they're super light and very comfy. Tempted to get the knee pads too for light long distance rides.

footy shinpads work just fine - from a cheapsportwarehouse near you for about 2 quid

Bars/brakes/shifter mostly, I think. Had a couple of incidents when the bike slid out on some off camber stuff, got my uphill foot down and then dragged the underneath of the shifter down the front of my leg as the bike carried on sliding. Another one where I clipped a pedal on a rock at speed and pinged myself straight over the bars, and the latest one I cocked up a tech corner on a cliff edge, and rather than going straight over the 20' drop, jumped off but caught my leg on the bike somewhere. That one was probably a pedal pin - very neat tear about 2" long. Oh, and assorted bits of rock thrown up by the front wheel.

Problem is, after 15 years of this kind of abuse, the skin is really fragile so it doesn't take very much to put a big messy hole in it.

Jon, I'm using a set of POC knee/shin pads. I've got various other types, including knee only pads but I find my shins take a beating. Generally throwing up rocks in hard corners which make a real mess of my shins. The POCS are quite warm, as are any full length pad, but they have this hinged knee which, for me at least, makes pedalling very comfortable. I find them more comfortable to pedal in that my 661 knee pads or any of the other knee/shin pads I've used. I've had a couple of outrageous falls onto them and they are deeply gouged but they have stayed in place and protected me well. They also have a add-on protector for the back of the leg... i've never even thought about trying that.

I take mine off for long uphills but can pedal easily with them on for a while until they get sweaty. Maybe less of an issue in the UK?

I think I've pretty much covered my thoughts there but here is my full review thing with pictures: POC Knee/Shin Protection Reveiw
