[Closed] Legality of Excesive Farm Muck/Mud on road + Silage

The discussion on trail blockages spurred me on to ask this question. I ride to work on country roads and in the winter frequently get me or my bike smothered in mud, cows muck or have to bunny hope great big clumps of hay & silage. This is annoying and dangerous for me and other road users. I have heard that the farmer does not have to do anything about it as it classed as a minor road although quite a lot of cars use it. Is this true?

If on a public road and the amount of debris does constitute a danger (ie; it has an effect on vehicle handling) then it is an offence if the farmer doesn't take reasonable steps to clear it up.

As far as I know it should be cleaned right away or soon after. Same goes for hedge trimming - drove past some idiot doing that earlier, crest of a hill, no warning signs and leaving hawthorn all over the road (can puncture a car tyre too).

I guess then I would have to report it to the council if it doesn't get cleared up by the next day I go in? As its a minor road?

If it's happening regularly, and it's your opinion that it's a danger, report it to the local fuzz, who should be able to give the appropriate encouragement to the person responsible for the debris...
