ok mini rant
i know its a 2 way bit of trail but the etiquette is generally people going up give way to people coming down.
you put in the work climbing up it and then enjoy the downhill, but today a large group just stayed in the middle and me and 4 others coming down had to give way. found it a little ignorant.
am i wrong and should i stop moaning?
It's easier to get going again if you stop going downhill, no? I'd think it was the other way round personally, I give way to folks who are climbing if the trail isn't wide enough for both parties.
its easy to set off uphill again aswell though, it isn't the north face of the eiger. i always give way going up and every other person i have seen have done the same.
but the etiquette is generally people going up give way to people coming down
no! other way round. (depending on location / circumstances etc etc)
I thought it was to give way to the climbers, that's what I have always done. I could see it would annoy you if there's a group having a break in the way though
Not sure which is "etiquette" but I would always give way to someone coming downhill myself.
am i wrong and should i stop moaning?
you are wrong, if someone needs to stop going up to let you past on that trail you are going too fast/ riding inconsiderately
general rule is to give way to the ascending rider, who in turn has the option to stop and let you past (ie about to stop anyway due legs failing etc)
what if it was a horse, would you still hoon past?
obviously you can ignore me, but you should read this thread where the other guy has a view
Always give way to people climbing on a 2 way course.
but today a large group just stayed in the middle and me and 4 others coming down had to give way.
Perhaps they didn't want to stray from the path. The big cat thing has been spotted again near Cragg. ๐ฏ
Sorry m8 but I agree with most of the others, person riding downhill has more control (or should have) over the bike than the person climbing.
The 'climb' up from Lee Quarry is tedious.
If you managed to stay awake long enough to realise that there were other riders coming down from Cragg Quarry enjoying the jumps and drops then well done, otherwise quit moaning.
As someone else has said, its not like its a the north face of the Eiger, or Jacob's etc. Its just a rather tedious connecting route, which is much better as a descent, therefore allow those who are riding it as a descent to enjoy themselves.
IMO...:)
etiquette my arse.
If I wrong then its no problem, i'll just stay in the middle and ruin someone's descent ๐
Chorlton, what animal you on about? I saw a giant black sheep this morning
to be fair I've re-read the OP
but today a large group just stayed in the middle and me and 4 others coming down had to give way. found it a little ignorant
blocking the trail whilst having a fag/ LMF break is ignorant, if that's the case they should have moved when they stopped never mind waiting for a rider to come up/ down the trail
if they were riding up then you only lose 20m of the DH so suck it up and be nice and give way ๐
there's only so many trails, if you want to get them to yourself don't ride them at popular times ๐

Giving way to climbers is how walkers do it... But cycling, I get out of the way of people on the way down, simply because I climb for the descents and I couldn't care less if I have to keep stopping on a climb but it's a pain on descents. I don't demand that others do the same ๐ But it just seems obvious to me.
northwind thats my opinion on it aswell, i've ridden the link loads and ride up Lee quarry a lot and every person i have seen on the link have given way to people coming down.
and i don't think those paw prints look like a big cat, more fox or dog like
yeah the decent is preety fast actually especialy jumping off those mad boulders all the way down... love the decent... ๐
yeah climbers shud give way to the decenders ๐
I just try to use common sense rather than slavishly following some set of artificial rules. It kind of works. I try not to balk people trying to clean hard climbs and when I'm climbing, I try take a line that allows anyone coming down to get past me cleanly.
I also appreciate that some people like climbing and there are places where it's near impossible to restart heading uphill, but it's dead easy coming down.
And at the end of the day, if someone slows me down heading in either direction, I try to be mellow about it. Big groups are often a bit thoughtless because they're engrossed in happily chattering away to their mates rather than because they're trying to ruin your day - we've all done it, is it really that big a deal?
I guess though, this answers the nagging concern I've always had about habitual trail centre riders dealing with two-way traffic - simple, they can't cope... Trail centre riders, six or fewer functioning brain cells -> oncoming ridrs -> information overload ๐
I thought the etiquette was that both parties make enough space on the trail so climbers keep climbing and descenders keep descending.
Yielding no trail is crap.
Wouldn't call lee quarry a trail center more a giant bike park.
A local farmer said that he had seen the beast near Cragg just the other week.
Woooooooo... ๐
He said it's got retractable legs so it can leap up at you better and it lights up at night and it's got four ears. Two of them are for listening and the other two are kind of back up ears.
It's claws are as big as cups and for some reason it's got a tremendus fear of stamps.
He also said it's got magnets on its tail so that if you are made of metal it can attach it's self to you and instead of a mouth, it's got four arses. ๐
Imo, they should have moved to single file to allow everyone to climb and to descent at the same time.
if people are coming down the trail, and i'm riding two abreast, we always go to single file to allow the people coming down to keep going!
Wouldn't call lee quarry a trail center more a giant bike park.
uh?
what you struggling with terrahawk?
Phil,
Just scream "Aaaaarghhhh Noooo brakes" as loud as you can....they'll probably just dive out of the way!
I do agree on that particular route that you should give way to downhillers although I have often come flying down it only to screech to a halt for dogwalkers
lol I'll try that next time
