I bought a 2012 Shimano XT chainset from my lbs on 12.04.12
The guy knew i planned to run a 1 x 9 speed setup, so i was to fit my 32t chainring from previous cranks later.
Before leaving the shop he said to me:
I will loosen off the bolts for you
So i said ok.
He picked up an allen key?
I said they are torx head bolts, he said:
No, it's an allen key
I said again, definitely a torx!
He proceded to use the 4mm allen key on the aluminium bolts and inevitability chewed up the heads - one so much that he ended up drilling it out!
He said, don't worry, i will get a new set for you.
Went home that day a bit disappointed to say the least, as i planned to fit and test that night.
Luckily the remaining 3 bolts still went in, with the correct tool bit i have in the shed a t30 torx and i had a 4th lying around that did in the meantime.
The next day, he phoned to say the bolts would be 4 weeks! 🙁
I was shocked at this, but nothing i could do and at least i managed to temporarily fit others.
The lbs salesman phoned me on 06.06.12 to say:
Your bolt is in
I said bolt???
He said:
Yes, bolt - The supplier charged me £10 for the set, so if you want 4, you will need to buy them
I went into the shop on 07.06.12 and collected 1 bolt
The next day i phoned him back to say, i think you should have given me the full set, as everyone is damaged.
Ended up having an argument over the phone, which confused me due to it being entirely his fault!
So much so he ended the conversation:
Don't come back in my shop
Now is it just me or is the salesman in complete denial of his wrong doing and his lack of knowledge of tools
A torx head bolt requires a torx tool bit
An allen head bolt requires an allen tool bit / key
Simples!
It's entirely his responsibility to replace all the bolts that were damaged.
Name and shame
What neninja said
+1
name and shame, as long as it definitely happened like you said. And yeah, 2012 xt is torx on the chainrings.
The shop cannot be allowed to treat customers so badly. Name & shame. Oh, and go in there during their busiest period to complain until it is resolved. Always in person, never the phone.
Rachel
Absolutely disgusting behaviour. Agree with above, but write a letter explaining your grievances saying you will be in on such a day to speak to the manager directly.
Sorry missed detail out above, just edited, don't think it changes much (he did actually give me 1 bolt)
He owns and runs the bike shop himself.
Sadly he had given you good advice. I would never go back. I'd also encourage anyone else to not go to his shop either.
I wouldn't have left the shop until I had 4 bolts in my hand. I'm puzzled that you took one bolt and then phoned the shop to complain.
The shop is still in the wrong though.
Yes, im kicking myself for leaving with 1, but that's what i did.
Name and shame, then send him a link to the thread...
+1 for "Name and Shame"
Don't let it get you down, buy new bolts from elsewhere then put the shop windows through.
Simples
ouch thats pretty bad...di ya get it sorted in the end? owt i can help with?
You could always be a bit more specific with the address without naming him, " my local shop in ??? (area) and other people near by can chose to use the shop or not.
Just a quick note on my local shop, managed to screw up my Hope 2 hub by jet washing it, that lovely clicking noise gone so i took it in and they cleaned it out replaced the pauwls and the cost £0 a thank you for my loyalty
A proper bike shop
The problem with these threads is that, by not naming the shop in question, it becomes a bit of an Aunt Sally for local bike shops in general.
I think it would be piss poor to name and shame. Crippling someone's reputation and livelihood over a small mishap. If you didn't stand your ground and got the result you wanted there and then, poor form on your part.
However, the shop should have definitely sucked it up and replaced the bolts FOC.
I'd go back and pester harder.
I live in Angus, Scotland btw
The shop is not in Arbroath.
or dundee.. 🙄
Snotty berry . Im pretty sure i ken the shop
It's not the cost of the bolts that is the issue here, more the attitude of the shop to errors that any business is likely to make from time to time.
A really good shop recognises mistakes and makes extra effort to ensure a positive outcome. I this case, the shop didn't seem to care about the customer's experience. I would emulate that you are likely to get the same bad experience whether is mistake is over a rounded bolt or a much more expensive error.

Crippling someone's reputation and livelihood over a small mishap.
I think that's misjudging the 'power' of a thread like this! Seems fair enough to name...the OP had a poor experience and it seems reasonable to want to share that so future customers, who can be bothered to research an LBS, can learn from it. Takes a lot more than one thread on ST before people really take note and frankly there are some companies with plenty of negative threads but the businesses are ticking along fine.

If it was simply the 'small mishap' in rounding out the bolts then I would agree.
The failure to replace all the bolts and telling the OP not to go back in the shop is reason to name and shame. That's not a small mishap, it's plain unfair.
An allen head bolt requires an allen tool bit / key
Unless it's a slightly rounded allen bolt, in which case a torx key will often work.
Anyhow, yes, that's not good.
name them 😕
Don't come back in my shop
I think this sums it up...the owner obviously doesn't give a hoot about his reputation. Name and shame! He is quibbling over £7.50 worth of bolts, I assume the OP has paid a fair chunk more to the shop than the £160 CRC are asking for the same product. It doesn't even sound like the OP took advantage of the usual 'free fitting', although maybe that was a blessing in disguise this time.
DIY next time. No way would I let anyone else near my pride and joy.
i hate local bike shops
Shoddy bike shop.
Obviously doesn't treat customer's bikes like their own.
A famous bike shop did that with me and still advertises on CTC and I gawp when I see their ads lol.
