I recently took a wheel with a few snapped spokes in to my LBS to have them replaced to be asked if silver were OK, as he doesn't do black.

I asked why no black (the wheel has black spokes) his response was that silver are stronger. Surely the strength of a spoke is dependent on its diameter and material it is made of.

Anyway, I asked him to get some black DT Swiss spokes and stop messin about.

I've heard this from other sources too - something about the anodizing process weakening the spokes. Bollox if you ask me.

He'll make you pay for the whole box simply for being a tart.

There was some pretty strong evidence to support the fact that silver spokes are indeed stronger, something to do with the heat treatment used in the colouring process.

It used to be the case that silver were slightly stronger - something to do with the anodising process used. It's not true anymore, they changed the process years ago, spokes are the same strength regardless of colour.

The only place I remember doing this (but I'm probably wrong) was Stif; don't recall as many threads about black spokes breaking as much as, say, Meta 5s.

Nothing to do with anodising at all. Most spokes are steel and you can't anodise that.

I did wonder about the anodising process and dissmissed it almost immediately.

He knows me too well and better not charge too much, or he will be doing without his digestives.......
