hey everyone especially those to the east of scotland's central belt! just wondering what the conditions in the lammermuirs will be like this weekend (assuming the still, cold weather continues)? is it rideable? i rode the pentlands the other day and it was pretty boggy.
also, i'll most likely get a train there so could anyone recommend a 15-20ish mile route that starts and finish at a train station, and that i can easily follow on my orange OS map? i've not really ridden there mcuh, except the coastal path and the SUW a few years ago.
so, what ya saying? ๐
Anyone?! ๐ฎ
Weather looks cold but bright and little wind http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/dg/galashiels_forecast_weather.html - could be nice?
The Lammermuirs are quite exposed and fairly high, and depending on where you go quite remote.
It's funny, but I have not read of many people MTBing in them. Don't know why, they just don't seem popular. A lot of landrover track I think.
Look up coastkid, he has done some blogs about riding in them.
I've only done the route round Hopes reservoir. Nice run, some steep bits though!
thanks nikk. i forget about coastkid's blog! so does landrover track = fairly all weather? i really just fancy getting out in the hills, so trailtype is not too important (though fun singletrack is a bonus to any ride!)
I was up the Lammermuirs, walking, a couple of weeks ago. I'm certainly keen to get a bike up there.
This is the route we walked, all of which would be bike-able.

Lots of other stuff up there though.
I have done a few routes - nearly all landrover track tho but all weather
The train is not a huge help. You could get the train to longniddry and take teh old railway to haddington then south on road to gifford. Or just ride out on the pencaitland railway walk . One climb I have done is by stobsheil farm a bit east of Humbie, the other from longyester over lammer law. should be able to make a circuit there somewhere.
Edit - I think thats pretty much what Druidh posted ๐
There is a nice scenic but not hugely challenging circuit - out on the pencaitland railway to just beyond ormiston, left turn on a branch towards new winton and pick up some paths thry u the woods, down thur butterdean wood towards haddington, old railway to longniddry.
thanks everyone. going to have a look at my maps now! should be a good day for it ๐
oh, just checked the coverage of my maps. don't have the map that covers the hills! ๐ฎ if i only i thought to do this sooner... perhaps i'll just ride out from edinburgh and get a train back, taking in some stuff around musselburgh and tranent and that...
well, never really made it into the lammermuirs, but what a ride! never bothered with the train, so all in from edinburgh did a 91km round route ๐ฎ happy days ๐ think i'll be planning something properly for my next east lothian attempt ๐
Here's some video's from around East Lothian, we've got a few nice trails.

Lol at Floaty Heed , lay off the home brew Yoda. ๐
I've not been up the Lammermuirs on a bike but have been up the old duns road past Whiteadder reservoir way. Not sure of the singletrack but there is certainly a lot of 4x4 track as it is a seriously heavily managed grouse moor, I've never seen so many grouse and so few raptors... if you are there in the dark you might get lamped too, I did and felt like I was being hunted down!
Stanfree - I was sober, 100% ๐
that was me pished!
