What are the signs of lactose intolerance? I've noticed that I get a cough and long lasting claggy sensation in my throat after consuming any dairy based products. I wondered if it comes on with age.
And at the same time and for the first time I've felt the need to supplement my diet as I'm training and racing more than ever.
I tried a Bikefoods product recently and rated it it, then I noticed on their website they recommend a Hemp based protein supplement.
Is this some soggy hippy rubbish or is there anything in it....and don't say 'yes Hemp'.
diarrhea + vomiting shortly after drinking milk / eating cheese are the dead give away signs. but those are at the extreme end of the scale.
Lots of snot, especially during exercise.
A permanently runny nose.
Nausea, bloating, wind.
etc.
etc.
a recent study estimated that 70% of the adult population in this country are lactose intolerant to some degree, but the sufferers have simply accepted their symptoms as 'normal'.
i'd kill myself if i couldn't eat cheese, anything from a cow is off limits, but the best cheese in the universe is made from sheeps milk / goats milk (ossau iraty + swaledale + manchego + etc)
you don't NEED to drink milk, you could try giving up the dairy stuff for a few days or a week or so, to see how you feel.
there's a chance other maladies might benefit also; asthma + eczema + migraines (and many more) all have strong links with food allergies.
Yes snot lots of it whilst training, that then gets on my throat and starts off the coughing.
Symptoms stop as soon as I stop.
I use their protein supplement. I always liked hemp seeds so like the idea of the supplement. It's main down side seems to be that it's very difficult to get to dissolve. Doesn't work too well sprinkled on cereal, perhaps best in smoothies and juices really.
Lactose intolerance - largely made up by people without qualification that want to sell you expensive stuff or services
So someone who gets the sh*ts after and only after drinking milk - what's that then TJ?
Lactose intolerance is real - just majorily exaggerated - thats the medical view.
The 70% figure up there - make 0.7% and you might be nearer

and yes, it comes on with age. as you get older you produce less lactase - the enzyme required to digest lactose.

5% of the uk population will test negative for the enzyme lactase - that's fully lactose intolerant (600,000 people in the uk).
but it's not quite as simple as testing positive = fine, negative = intolerant, it's a long sliding scale.
as Jeremy points out, 'lactose intolerance' seems to have become a catch all term for 'problems after eating dairy foods' i'm as guilty as anyone for doing this.
there's more than just lactose in milk that people can have problems digesting / processing - some of the proteins can cause problems too.
i consider myself lucky, in keeping with the best practise of pub science, i reckon that most people have a food-stuff that causes them problems, they don't realise it, and just accept stomach pain / indigestion / skin reaction / whatever as normal. i've found that i have problems with cow's milk, and if i stick to my 'diet' i never get indigestion, or stomach pain, my asthma goes away, and the sun shines all day and everything is butterflies and rainbows and we all live happily ever after.

I switched to Soya milk and I am less bloaty and windy. I also use soya protein powder for recovery. I also got less bloaty when I switched from white bread to granary, the Mrs has noticed she doesnt bloat as much either now after us changing breads. People do react differently to foodstuffs.
Prevalence varies greatly by country, such as Sweden (3%), Denmark (3%), Finland (16%), Switzerland (17%), England (20-30%), France (42%), US caucasians (6%)... The prevalence of Lactose Intolerance varies too greatly by region for country statistics to be meaningful.
Anyway nowhere is it at 70%.
It would seem that there may be many people self diagnosing the condition with less accuracy than a doctor.

and, as i said, it's a sliding scale, 5% of the uk population have zero ability to digest lactose, but many many more have less than 'perfect' ability to digest lactose, and may benefit from easing off the cathedral city.

Asian people dont really consume milk or by products and think we smell of milk FWIW.
Goats milk works with me on the better digestion thing, particularly being less snotty, am prepared to own up to old age.
Monkeychild - Your bread comments are very common because most modern mass produced bread is not made properly (the chorleywood process). This process massively speeds up production but does not let the natural workings of the bread making process happen (yeast and all that). To put it simply this then happens in your body so you feel bloated. Lots of folk that think they are wheat intolerant are really modern bread intolerant.

I suffer from severe migraines, have done for years. I had some blood tests done a few years back that diagnosed that I was intolerant to dairy produce. I cut out ALL dairy, even the slightest ingredients (whey, lactose, butter, etc) from my whole diet for 6 months. I went from having 1-2 migraines per week to 1 every 2-3 months. Now try telling me I am not dairy intolerant!! It has significantly improved my daily life.
On the subject of producing lots of phlegm & coughing, I still get this every time I ride, especially when riding hard - so, for me, it is nothing to do with the milk as I still don't drink it!! Hayfever may be?!?!
