Having started the red routes this summer and therefore not bothering with protection due to the perfect conditions - yesterday I discovered the hard way that mud and water actually make rock gardens quite hazardous - yes, I know this is pretty amazing stuff but you'll have to believe me when I tell you it's true.

Anyhoo, one flying gambol over a wall leaving my bike the other side, one trip to the hospital with a gashed knee so deep I did'nt know whether to bandage it or **** it and 3 nights off work later, I'm slowly beginning to realise I aint bullet proof and may need some protection this winter - so - your faves and best prices if you please?

Ta muchly in advance. 😳

My 661 Kyle Strait kneepads are into their second year and work well for me. I never thought I had particularly big knees, but large fit nicely. Bit warm in the summer although I'm used to them now, but great as it gets colder, for keeping knee joint warm. Knee damage ( and I cant afford any more of that !) has been prevented more than once.

661 Riot elbow pads, on the other hand , in my view are rubbish, straps, velcro and stitching are far too unrefined for my delicate skin and the pad is on the small side. After half an hour my arms look as though I've been attacked by leeches. That's even if worn over a jersey.

g-forms - comfy, decent protection and can be bunged in the washing machine after every ride.

+1 for POC VPD, yes its expensive but you hardly notice the pads when riding, also had 661 Kyle's too and they are good for a hard shell and obviously cheaper

Cheers all - on ebay now looking at Kyle straits in large - can be picked up for under £30 as long as you don't mind the slightly girly black and purple colour. 😉

They are the ones I have - you don;t really notice the colour. Measured my legs and same up slightly above large (I'm not)....should have got the medium I think as they are bigger than I need.

Still, hardly notice they are on and they don't slip.

Gren - I'm coming up 21 inch thigh and about 16 inch calf - guessing the large then?

661 riots for knees. I use them every ride now as I barely notice them when pedaling. Also good if you have dodgy knees as they double as knee warmers. I've had a few spills and they protect the knees very well.

Thanks for the answers all and I was indeed after the riots but just could'nt get them 'in budget' - however I ended up with these and they seem to get decent reviews - had to be done tonight as I've got bugger all else to do til I'm back at hospital on Friday 😆 ...cheers all.
