Does anyone make a good 20" bike, capable of taking a hammering and with decent front suspension.

My son currently rides a isla bike 16" but its getting a bit small and the rigid forks make life hard for him on rockier runs. Would go for the next size up but they do not do one with suspension and I would prefer a bike with decent front forks if at all possible?

Any suggestions?

Was looking at Cubes in Cyclewise, Whinlatter yesterday. They look pretty good.
Looking again, no 20" wheels with suspension though.

Spesh Hotrock 20 here - its a decent bike and not too heavy. The Ridgebacks are worth a look as well.

This is a really cool kids' bike. It has OK forks, decent 7spd gearing and a hydroformed frame that's basically a small Diamondback. Wheels are quite cool and seem tough, and it's a light bike.

I hunted high and low and decided on the Viper from CRC - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=23294
£120
To my eyes it was the best value, as you aren't paying for a big brand name and all the components are easily as good or better than, eg. the Ridgeback. Ahead instead of quill stem being a giveaway.
It'll be here tomorrow (ordered yesterday), so will give an update when I've checked it over.

Can you weight it and report back? (Me too after a 20"). Almost no manufacturers (Except Islabikes) provide weights. - I guess it's all too embarrassing for most of them.

I've seen most weigh around 11KG (24lb) (Dawes do quote weights on their website).

Yep, I'll see what it comes up as. Can't be as heavy as his current steel jobby.

My eldest boy had a Cube Ltd Team for his sixth birthday last year. Absolutley loves it. He is very slight and found the Ridgeback too heavy. The Cube does not have front suspension which does not seem to be a problem (reduces weight), but has Shimano gear on it and seems to be top quality. It has withstood a years serious use and abuse pretty well - expect ti to be good for the next two children! Use it on singletrack and forest roads. £220 from Squarewheels. Would definitely get another. Hope this helps.

Well, mountaincarrot - I weighed the box and it came up as 19KG! I thought, jeez I've made a mistake here. But no, I open the box and f&^*ing CRC have sent me a BMX! So 3 days before my son's birthday I've got to find another bike. Thanks CRC. 👿

Both my lads have had these but earlier models... the forks actually work , it's hydroformed... they love em. Not sure what the 2010 looks like though!

The eldest is on the 24" version now 😀

Love this though....

Shame. Scotland a bit far for a kids bike 🙁

Trek is a good option, I think they stock those locally.

I've seen the Marins in Cycle Surgery - nice looking bikes, just a bit pricey. (I'd spend it, but the wife won't let me!)
