Just chucked my bike on the scales for peace of mind with my rack more than anything else but was pleasantly surprised to find it weighing in at 28lbs! Not bad for a budget build made up of mostly older 2nd hand stuff for under £300!
Getting the bug again now though and feel a frame upgrade is imminent....

Unless they're expensive scales made specifically for weighing things that light, it's probably a very inaccurate reading. Sorry!

On the plus side, low weight is the most overrated feature on any bike.

My current HT is about that weight, and I was quite surprised chatting to some guys riding XC carbon HTs that theirs were sitting about 26lb or so - apart from the one guy that had obsessively selected every last component for low weight, and got it down to 22lb or something

Funny how people can be sceptical without even knowing what bike it is.

28lb is quite believable for a 26in HT.

22lb is heavy for a carbon xc hardtail

I use a set of digital suitcase scales from Amazon and I've done a bit of dirty calibration using bags of sugar from the kitchen and they are surprisingly good. And they only cost a fiver too... 🙂

28lb for a 26" HT is very believably - IIRC, I had one that was lighter than that way back in the 90s and that was certainly built on a budget 'cos I had no money then!

I'm not all into that weight weenie stuff, but a light XC bike is definitely a good thing to have and I don't ever remember wishing that my bike was heavier than it is...

My Cotic Solaris is 11.5Kg with rigid carbon forks, 12.5Kg with suspension forks and dropper post. That's without going for weight-weenie kit, no carbon apart from the forks, just stuff that's going to last. Those are trail ready, not showroom, weights.

Same kit on a carbon frame would get the weight to around 10Kg, I'm fairly sure I've seen weights below this.

My 29er carbon HT is 19.6lbs still room to get it lower than that.

It's all relative to your budget. A Scott Scale 730 retails for £2400 and weighs 23.4lb. Of course, if you don't mind dropping £7,700 you can get the RC 700 SL which weighs 18.7lb...

The Solaris frame weighs 2.25Kg, a carbon frame will be around 1Kg so you'll lose 1.25Kg there. Next big saving would be wheels/tyres. I've Bonty XR2/1 at the moment, going to the lightest Maxxis tyres would lose 500g at either end.

OP, that sounds pretty impressive for £300 given the prices quoted above!

I always assumed my bathroom scales would be well out.
But then I had my bike weighed by a bike shop and it was only 100g different.

My heavier bike is definitely quicker off-road than my previous lighter bike. The delta is about 1kg. Much more fun too.

I find that very light bikes are not very good fun, however fast that makes them in particular situations.

It all depends on its intended purpose. And if like me you enjoy how a light bike feels regardless of how fast it's riden, then it's very important

Aye - mines around 25lb with full mudguards bottle cages heavyish tyres etc. Remove all that stuff and put some paper thin skinny tyres and lose at least another couple of lb. all bought second had - owes me under a grand

28lbs is easily achievable even on a tight budget, my old BFe was under 28lbs despite a dropper and beefy tyres, I built my older Kinesis XC120 to just over 22lb despite the face it had a 140mm revelation and 780mm bars, no dropper and 2.25 Nobby Nics mind, but I didn't throw huge money at it, no carbon in sight.

My T130C RS however is heavier than I thought it would be, I've changed wheels, bar and tyres and it's still over 30lbs, though I haven't tried as hard as I did on my Foxy Carbon, which with Next SL cranks and 2.35 Nobby Nic/Rock razor set up tubeless was well under 28lbs.

Loads of variations (mine don't have the writing) and I think that you can even get the same ones from Mountain Warehouse. I tend to balance mine in the workstand clamp and dangle the bike underneath and this works ok:

21.2 on my carbon hardtail. It is nowt flash and I have not even ditched the tubes yet.

Still not as good to ride as the 28 lb full sus.

I think my Solaris weighs more than my Fuel EX 😆

But then the Fuel only weighs 26lbs so that's not difficult!

28lbs for 300 quid is pretty good going.

I'm surprised there appears to be some skepticism though.

This was 24.5lbs

[img] [/img]

It was a spare bike and never really got used (you can tell by the tyres!). It became the donor for this (25lbs):

My FS 29er is also dead-on 24lbs and that's certainly nothing weight weenied up, albeit it's a good spec:

SC Tallboy 2 CC
Fox 32 Factory 120mm
Full XTR (2x11) (including the daft titanium and carbon cassette 🙂 )
Carbon bar and post
Hope Pro2 Evo + WTB i29s and Maxxis Ikons

Could easily get sub-24lb with a dropper simply by swapping to 1x, but I rather like my 2x11 and am not quite ready to ditch it yet... 🙂

I weighed mine the other week with my cheap eBay scales. So comparatively that's fine, qualitatively probably not 😉

Heaviest to lightest: Stache, FlareMax, Aeris, Mojo, SolarisMax

The stache is running heavy 29+ wheels, the flaremax and aeris are similar builds, the mojo a bit posher but it's lighter to start with and the solarismax would run away with it were it not for the lardy Yari fork.

On the trails tho based on climbing ability I'd probably go SolarisMax, Stache, Mojo, Flaremax, Aeris.. unless it was rocky and then I'd change my mind again.

TLDR; interesting not compelling 😉

The bargain bin FS XC 29er I built out of used bits is about 27.5lbs If I get some nice wheels, a carbon bar and 1x I could get it down to about 24 ish I think.

Wife's Rock Lobster (The Easton Ultralight one) is just on 23lb.
Still has tubes and 3*.

Disc Trucker is over 35lbs ready to roll and the bloody BMX is even heavier than that!

Can't remember the last time I weighed a bike...somewhen in the late 90's probably.

mine weighs about what a winch and plummet 150mm travel full suss would weigh...

I've just built up a rigid singlespeed. I weighed it and it's 29.6lb*! Jesus! That's about the same as my Disc Trucker with gears, rack, mudguards, dynohub and lights.

* ok, it has a small pump and a bottle cage, and the uncut steerer is probably about 12lb…

Ah, my apologies, with so much use of uplifts, I assumed you were referring to this incorrect method of getting to the top of a hill.

Winch away, sir!

Just to add balance I weighed my FS enduro type bike and the luggage scales I used showed around the 32lb mark.

Aluminium 160/145 travel / Yaris / GX 11 speed / heavy dropper post / DT Swiss wheels (30mm internal width) and Maxxis dhr2 / aggressor 2.35s.

Literally nothing light weight attempted anywhere on it.

lbs are quite a good number as decimals aren't really needed.

I did lol a bit at the 22lb isn't that light - not that you can't go lighter but a lot of the claimed weights below that don't include pedals, and a lot of the measured weights below that are for bikes that will never be ridden hard or are pure fantasy.

Not that it isn't possible to go sub 20lb, just that only about 10% of the people who say they have a 22lb bike on the internet actually have.

Sorry - just to please you I should have said by a bike shop I trust and who have taken time to buy good equipment and check it for accuracy.
It was one of the red-bordered hook things that I've seen in a few places.
I'm sorry it wasn't in your favourite lab conditions 🙂

The reason I did it was that it weighed 29lb, but many said on here that it was unlikely. They weighed it at 13.07kg.

It all comes down to the frame, fork and wheel weight and the old triumvirate of light, strong, cheap - pick two.

The Tallboy CC earlier in the thread is a classic example; eye wateringly expensive, but incredibly light. Coupled with 32mm forks, rather than going for 34s which add almost 0.5kg.

My Ti 29er Pegasus with 2x11 XTR, 32mm forks and 1.5kg carbon wheels was under 23lbs.

Tried posting a pic but photobucket seems to have changed their policies. Frame is 03-04ish rockhopper, mk1 Pikes, 1x10 and rock shox dropper. Scales are proper Salter hanging scales for weighing animals and the like.
Not really bothered about the weight, like I said it was mainly to see how my buzzrack would cope with my unicycle strapped on as well!

I'll take that even if it isn't true.
My Fatty is 34lb with pump, spare tube and mudguards.
