Came home from the pub to see a distinctive bike chained to the railings near my flat. I shall not go into specifics, but it was deffinitely mentioned in the local police press release a few weeks ago as being stolen. I rang the new number: 101. Two nice policemen arrived 15 minutes later. Bike has just been removed from the railings with bolt croppers and placed in the back of a Police Transit van, hopefully to be reunited with its owner. If you get your bike back tomorrow, you can buy me a beer when you see me. Night.

Sorry v666, It wasn't a Spesh that I rang in. It was some retro bike pron that was probably someone's project/pub bike. I suspect the tea leafs didn't quite know what they had, as it likely looked liked a 100 quid FS Apollo to them.

Think stw towers should put up a sticky thread just for stolen bikes .

Or do what I did, start a blog, FB and Twitter account. Potentially a much wider reach than just one forum.

http://www.stolenbristolbikes.com/

Or there's a national register, free to use, here:

On eBay, you can set up a saved search for "Specialized Rockhopper" (you might also want to include misspellings like "Specalized" given many bike thieves' spelling ability). Just enter your search term, then click "save search".

It'll email you with a picture of the listing every time a new one is added. If your bike pops up, put a massive bid on it, and contact the police.

You can do something similar on Gumtree too.

I once stole a stolen bike. I saw my housemate's bike (which had been stolen from our house a few months earlier) just leaning up against some railings outside a bookies. So I picked it up, and pedalled off, with some mangy heroin-addicted scroat chasing after me. I think that's the fastest my hearts ever raced, but I managed to get away from him (thankfully the bike was still in good working order).

Later, we called the police and let them know. Apparently I didn't commit any crime because I took the bike in the knowledge that I was reappropriating stolen goods. The scroat never called the police, obviously knew it was stolen.

I probably wouldn't be that brave now, mind!

Good work, good citizen!

I've stolen a stolen bike before - had to mug the guy to get it back. Looking back on it, it was very foolhardy as there were about 6 of them and 2 of us so if they'd actually thought about it, they'd easily have kicked the shit out of us. Fortunately, they just scattered, we each grabbed one of them as they rode past.

A friend of mine stole his bike back once.. he also stole the desperate thieving heroin addict that was riding it..!!

He chucked bike and rider in the back of his transit and deposited the thief at the local police station much to the surprise of the local constabulary.. he used their confusion as an opportunity to get off home before they started asking funny questions..

He didn't get any comeback from it..
