I was there when he bought it (this was 09 remember, when Everything Was Cheaper). He did lie, but not to me 😉

When my FS snapped way out of warranty last year, my beloved said obviously I needed a new bike so I bought one. She soon clarified her position, 'Your bloody money not OURS '. This was shortly followed by,' Why is your credit card bill always so huge?'. I wonder.
Incidentally why are bikes luxuries but the stuff she wants are necessities?

This thread is so depressing for me. Women ride bikes too you know! You lot saying it's a trap and she just wants a new kitchen I bet you're the ones that pull the 'i can't ride coz I've not got a pass from the missus!' when really it's because you can't be arsed and don't feel like going out in the mud and cold!

Told my fiancé just before Christmas I wasn't going to buy anymore bikes till after we are married ( end of March this year) then after her trip to NYC I informed her I'd ordered a new titanium fat bike frame ,my reasoning to her was it wasn't a complete bike just a frame .shes got her own back though as she is not letting me take my bike on our honeymoon (Isle of Skye )

Yes, my wife is very much into bikes and the house rule is normally n + 1 is only OK if n + 1 does not exceed the number of her bikes. However, baby means my n + 1 was leveraged into a shiny laptop.

I told my other half I wanted to buy a new bike in a message via facebook while she was in the room next to me. What can i say... i was scared and weak. But it did make her laugh.

Wifey bought a new Specialized Fate Carbon Expert last month, does this mean I can get a Yeti carbon arc frame?

That's why my post wasn't gender specific

My other half has now taken my old bike to add to her collection to decide if she wants a new HT or full sus next year.

Strike while the irons hot, the scent of carbon on carbon range topper is in the air, teflon your balls you need to go big here! Can she be talked into a third or forth job? long term investments and all, quality costs but is cheaper in the long run, less maintenance more cuddle and emotional support time, or have all the bullshit avenues been well and truly rinsed and it's down to trading manual labour, faux romantic gestures and keeping up appearances in front of relatives!

to be honest - depends on your understanding of what the savings account is for..... be prepared to pay for something of equivalent value for her out of it too.

myti - I suppose I should apologise as I did mention the kitchen 😳

This was really a bit of reflecting my own in-family joke but it does seem to match up to reality for several people I know. I am also aware of several people whose (female) other halves would be fine with them getting a new bike so long as they got their own one too.

hand duly self-slapped.

It's interesting seeing the different approaches and views here. I too have just had "the chat" with my wife about a new bike. I didn't do it because I need permission or because we can't afford it (we have separate bank accounts to allow such things and we, well I, can afford it), I did it because spending a couple of grand on something is a big enough decision to warrant at least mentioning to her.

Pleasingly her response was "well, you've sold your car as you didn't use it, you can afford the bike so why not?". Easy.

UPDATE

Just to clarify… My suggestion was that we both take an equal £xxxx from our joint savings as my bike was dead and it would take me a couple of years to save up for a replacement (I don’t do credit). Her response was that she didn’t need anything and having a bike is very important to me, so we’d just buy the bike. The savings pot is for replacing cars, computers, kitchen appliances, windows etc. Necessities basically.

However, and here is the real f###ing kicker… I called the LBS at 9:00 and 1 second this morning to say TAKE MY MONEY and somebody has only gone and bought the damn bike on Saturday afternoon after I had left. Not a sniff on it for 12 months and two buyers in 4 hours!

Arse. Biscuits.

PS. We don’t need a new kitchen and I do all of the cooking.

PPS. She gets a discount through work with Evans, so if necessary I’ll get it from there for only £26 more.

Now you have your foot inn the door and the cheque is virtually written the basd luck of missing the bargain means buying a significantly bigger bargain is the only solution.

Something made of unobtanium perhaps?

Significantly bigger bargain has already been spotted! 😀

Cannondale Trigger 29 4 (2014) for the same money. Better looking bike too IMHO.

That pull shock could prove a bloody expensive nightmare if it goes wrong in the next 10 years. Possibly not an easy thing to get spares for or a replacement once it's a couple of years out of production. Nice discount and bike though.

It's a Fox. Won't Mojo be able to look after it?

It'll be getting actual spares 6/7/8 years down the line that will be the issue, rather than them knowing how to fix it.

Mrs_OAB's Headshok is 15 years old.
Only now are some parts becoming scarce.

Its not a Headshock, its a DYAD rear shock. This is the shock in question. I'd be hesitant myself if I planned on the bike being my min ride for 10 years.

JoeG, I think Matt OAB's point was that he has personal experience of looking after an unusual Cannondale suspension system, and the concern about future support and availability of spares isn't necessarily valid.

I'd be hesitant too though, and would definitely tap up Mojo for their view on future maintainability if it were me.

Yes, my point was that the 'odd' systems that Cannondale sometimes use do seem to be well stocked for parts for the future.
Having said that, I bet there are a good few more Headshoks around that DYAD's...?

What did you go for, the Trek, the 'dale or something else?

And will it see its debut by Monday??

Hopes H_t_S looked on Pauls Cycles before ordering if he went for the 'dale.

It depends when it arrives.

I want to give it a shake down in daylight near home. San Marino or something similar isn't the best idea for the first flight on a bike that I've put together myself.

We wives are brilliant.
Mr bh asked me on Thursday if he could have a second hand bargain from our lbs.

I don't know why he asked because he knows I would say yes 😀

It isn't second hand. He's paid them to dirty up a new one.

Next he'll be telling you that he won it in a prize drawer.

UPDATE

The LBS have just been on. The buyer for the original bike has just pulled out!

So, if anyone wants a Trek Fuel EX8 29er for a good price give Cooksons in Whitefield a call.

Last time I bought a new bike I got a slight stare from the at the time fiancée. I softened it with "and yes you can get one too". It's easy in our household. If we want it, and can afford it outside the budget, we buy it.

This will change if we ever have kids. Hence I'm stockpiling when the going is good.
