I didn't get covered in latex (I know some of you would pay for that anyway)
The tyres are still holding air (one since Wednesday night)
A track pump was sufficient
I did need to use an extra Velox tape in one wheel
.
Now let's see if they hold up when I ride them tomorrow
.
One Kendra Small Block 8, one Kenda Nevagal and a pair of WTB Laserdisc rims for the record

what?!

getting covered in sticky white liquid latex is the whole point of 'going ghetto'

Now take your tyres off, and do it again properly.

Was going to post a thread but I'll use this one if the OP doesn't mind. Gave this a go for the first time myself last week with mixed success. Kenda nevegal/blue groove on Mavic 717. Front holds fine and has been ridden 2 or 3 times no without incident. The rear however seems to lose pressure over the course of about 3 or 4 days (holds up fine when riding). Here's the thing though, whilst fiddling about with the tyre last weekend, I noticed air escaping from between the rim edge and the BMX tube strip. This makes no sense to me. The rim strip should be sat more or less in contact with the rim and all the air is above the strip 'inside' the tyre. If air was escaping from the join it should be from above the rim strip, not below it, no? If you drop the pressure enough to flex the tyre about (say, 15-20 psi), you can clearly see air and a little milk coming out from under the strip. WTF? how did the milk get in there?

has you 'rim strip' been pulled under the tyre anywhere along the length of the tyre? or can you still see it all the way round?

nah, it's visible all the way round, in fact I left a mm or two sticking out when I trimmed it. I'm wondering if I nicked a hole in it with tyre levers or something...

Did my new laserdiscs too - the rim holds that tyre bead like a vice!

There will be air trapped under the BMX tube when you install it unlees you get it to bed down perfectly - which you can't. That will get pushed out as you inflat the tyre and the air pressure presses the BMX tub against the rim, but a small pocket might get left and there might be some "soapy water" in there (or all sorts)

Equally if the rim tap isn't up to it's job you could be getting a spoke / nipple / drilling swarf puncturing the BMX tube from the inside (possibly repeatedly as it reseals). That would fit the symptoms as described. Take it apart and check for protruding spoke / nipple / drilling swarf etc and see if that helps.

I'm guessing you need a new BMX tube each time you take the tyre off?

Jase - no, you can re-use it as many times as you can get it to work, but if youve nicked it when fitting then (like a tube) you need to replace it.

no, I've reused bmx tubes with no issue.

Of coure, if it's got a hole in then you will!

yeah, obv will need replacing if there's a hole. I just wondered if it was possible to get the tyre back on once the strip has been trimmed, without the strip dissapearing into the rim along with the tyre bead. Sounds like it should be fine then, plenty of soap I'm guessing.

Wiredly I've just done 2 x Kenda Small Block 8 on Mavic 317 rims.
First one went up immediately (I do have a compressor) and has stayed perfect.
The second one was simply not for going up and there was quite a gap between the tyre and the rim/tube. Finally got it up but it currently goes down over about a week.
Only differences I can think of is that the first rim was old and the second one is brand new - I've only put a bit of insulation tape around as rim tape...... do I need more than this??

surely if the rim strip has a hole the latex will seal it? (providing you slosh it about)

I went through this turbulent experience last week end, I smuggly done one tyre (Bonty Jones on Bonty rythim elite rim) with a track pump, no problem it took 5minutes.

Tried the other one a day later and gave up after about an hour and half with nothing more to show than half a bottle of stans all over the garage floor. I even went back to LBS with stans, tyre and rim and asked if they could do it, thinking it would be a doddle with a compressor, but NO, they only do this service as a workshop booking "cause it could be a 2 hour plus job".

All seems a bit faff tastic to me, once my one tubeless tyre starts letting air out i'm back to slime tubes.

My front 'ghetto' blew out on a tiny jump on sunday. I popped the bike over a small rise, probably no more than 12" in the air at most . On landing the front wheel lost all of its air instantly and made a machnie gun clatter noise, like whn your trying to unsucessfully ride out of a deep tractor rut. The loss in handling then caused me to crash , rather luckily into some deep leaves, could have been much worse. Conti Vert Pro Kevlar bead in 2.3 , non UST. UST mavic rims I reckon the stretch soomehow, or maybe the bmx tube makes the bead well that littlebit smaller It was at a fairly low 25 psi, so that might have had something to do with it.I did build up the rim with a few layers of insulation tape as well.

Fitted a UST Racing Ralph , still with the BMX tube, so will be testing that combo out to see if it holds up
