Pack of M3 bolts and nuts from B&Q.
Disassemble brake lever.
10 minutes with a 2.5mm drill and an M3 tap.
Add bolt with a nut on the outside as a lock nut.
Re-assemble lever.
Works perfectly (save that you need to wind the reach back out to undo the brakes before wheel removal).
Now the right size for five year old hands.
Sit back, feel suitably pleased with the lack of unforeseen faffing.
