Too little pressure in my rear tyre has resulted in a dented rim. Rock one, brand new second ride in spank oozy nil. What is the best course of action? It's a pretty small dent, I run tubes but wanted to set up tubeless eventually. Would post a photo but have no idea how to do it.
Leave it, or bend it gently back, either using an adjustable, or ****ting it with a piece of wood.
Tease it back into shape with a large rock (or a pair of pliers).
I've dented my rim!
Well buy a new one then. Next...
Wow, simply retarded answer right there.
Yes depending how how large or small it may be, you may want to think about prizing it back into place mm at a time.
I personally wouldn't worry too much unless actually running tubeless already.
Try one of these morningstar wrench (if you can find one)
Since Mr Morningstars unfortunate demise, that tool has become virtually impossible to find.
Some alternative suggestions here: http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/straightening-dinged-rims-does-anyone-make-a-specific-tool
If it is not too big bend it back in. Do a bit at a time starting from the out side and work to ward the center symmetrically. Take several goes to get it back in to shape. I think the adage in panel beating is first in last out, as the that is where the metal will have stretched the most.
cancel the direction actually. Start in the middle and slowly move out rethinking it, but still keeping to the first in last out principle.
Thanks all. Perthmtb, yes, it looks exactly like that. I will attempt a bend back as suggested. Ta
Thanks velomechanic for the link.
Thebrick, thanks for the tip.
My rear rim has several dents far worse than that and still sets up easily enough tubeless
Most important thing is to hold a flat metal object against the outside of the dent before bending back with adjustable wrench. It keeps the wrench in the right position and stops it chipping/scratching the outside of the rim. A butter knife is ideal. Start at the edges and work in. Don't overbend!
