Had a nice tootle into the peak District this morning on the road bike as I wasn't feeling up to the 100 mile Skegness-athon my mates were riding.
Was a lovely morning, strong smell of wild garlic going up Via Gellia, nice coffee and cake in Rowsley, tootling back down the A6 just before Belper when...
...I felt a splash and a thud, and a can of Carling bounced off me and under my back wheel. I looked round to see where it was coming from and saw the second come out the rear passenger window of the Rover that was overtaking me! (To be fair, they were good shots cos that one hit me as well, and I was doing 20mph)
The car drove off.
The red mist descended and I went after it as I'd seen the red traffic light up ahead that they would have to stop at.
By the time I'd got there, I'd realised that hauling them out the car and beating them to a pulp was unlikely to be worthwhile, mainly because they were big lads and I didn't think roadie shoes with MTB cleats would give me much purchase on tarmac in the event of a proper barney.
I got a mouthful of homophobic abuse from the passengers in the back (to be fair, I was in lycra...) their mother in the front seat seemed to find it all highly amusing, and the lights changed for them to drive off before it could go any further. The driver car behind him who'd clearly seen the original incident when the cans were thrown at me confirmed my suspicions that the people in the Rover were complete ass-hats.
I feel good that I didn't resort to violence, but suspect that I'd be feeling even better if I had
That's dump, get it reported to the police you had a witness and a car reg I guess? If they don't do anything this time round the car and the driver will have the report saved against them so if they do it again hopefully they will punished.
I think this would also be classed as an assault.
Report it, they may do worse to the next rider!
I got a mouthful of homophobic abuse from the passengers in the back (to be fair, I was in lycra...)
So, homophobia is justified if the target is dressed in lycra?? ๐ฏ
I take it you've reported this to police, rather than just mouthing off on a forum...
BTW; nasty incident, and good that you're ok. People who do things like this are scum.
Funnily enough, in the heat of the moment, getting the reg no to report it passed me by. I'm probably more annoyed with myself for missing that opportunity than I am by the actual events.
So I am just mouthing off on a forum rather than reporting it, and it's a forum that regards most lycra clad roadies as deviants from the norm...
I have a feeling someone was successfully prosecuted for such an "attack" recently, but can't recall what the offence actually was?
...and this is, one of the minor ones admittedly, reasons i have resisted road riding. Seems to be a higher chance of running into cockmonkeys like you encountered out on the roads. Shame but there you go
Glad your ok an' all that.
and it's a forum that regards most lycra clad roadies as deviants from the norm...
So, you're saying that homosexuals are 'deviants from the norm', then?
Please define this 'norm' of which you speak.
But look on the bright side --- your not the one driving a Rover
Sorry to hear this Swadey...hope you're okay.
Still, at least there is some sympathy on here...well, aside RB pick-pick-picking at your every word ๐
Jeez RB, give it a rest - I try and make a light hearted jest about what may have been a serious incident if things had been a little bit different, and you seem to be making me out to be a villain in all this because of it.
I make jokes about my gay friends in the same way I make jokes about my fat friends and my friends who ride better than me - nothing is meant and no one gets their knickers in a twist, so wind your neck back in.
If you had a water bottle i would have tipped it in the open window then sped off down a side street laughing to myself.
A similar thing happened to a bunch of roadie mates out training who were literally ran off the road by a couple of neds in a corsa. Silly plonkers stopped for a chippy in the next town - its amazing the damage a few pairs of roadie shoes can do to a corsa, they came out chippie... too late, their sad little car would be looking for a spell in the body shop.
Only fair as they could have killed someone! Just think if that well aimed can knocked you off onto the road.
I've expressed sympathy.
I got a mouthful of homophobic abuse from the passengers in the back (to be fair, I was in lycra...)
So, from that, wearing lycra = being homosexual? And the abuse would be somehow justified? ๐ฏ
I asked for an explanation of what Swadey meant.
jolly well have not got one yet...
Jeez RB, give it a rest
What, and not challenge lazy and ignorant comments?
So, from what you're saying, if you were actually homosexual, and dressed in lycra, then it would be more understandable that you had abuse hurled at you?
Sadly, the waterbottle/cleats/opening the tailgate ideas all came flooding in after they driven off.
(Oh yeah, and from that point in Belper the first side street I could have escaped up is steep and cobbled - not sure I'd have outpaced the Rover going up that!)
OK let me try and keep this simple.
I regularly wear lycra when riding.
Friends - riders or not - regularly accuse me of being gay/exhibitionist/deviant because of this. It happens on this forum as well. It is nothing to get upset about, certainly not compared to being hit by cans of beer on the road.
No offense was intended by my comments. It was meant to illustrate the narrowness of these people's minds.
It seems rather to have illustrated your own issues, I fear.
Rudeboy, you are a bell-end. May a thousand cans of Carling rain down upon you the next time you venture out on your bike.
Rudeboy rides a bike ? ๐ฏ

Nice bit of back-pedaling there, Swadey.
Still does not in any way explain how it would be somehow more understandable/justified that these Cs threw cans at you, believing you to be homosexual, though.
Your comments seem to suggest that their assumption that you were homosexual was somehow borne out by you wearing lycra. Funny, I've never thought of lycra as a particularly homosexual clothing material, as the vast majority of those I've met wearing lycra cycling gear have been heterosexual. I may be being naive here, but I fail to see the association, somehow. Of course, if you can show me that wearing lycra has a direct correlation with the wearer's sexuality, then I'd be inertested in seeing the evidence.
And just because a few knob-heads on here think it's ok to call roadies or lycra wearers 'deviant's or 'gay/jey/ghey' etc, does not in any way make it any more acceptable.
As for the negative and insulting comments being directed towards me; well, I expect that, tbh. Just shows the depth of phobia and ignorance in some people.
Even without the reg number you should still report it.
andywhit:Rudeboy rides a bike ?
*s*****
As for the negative and insulting comments being directed towards me; well, I expect that, tbh. Just shows the depth of phobia and ignorance in some people.
Or alternatively it shows how much of a C0ck you are.
RB how many times does he have to say this ?
No offense was intended by my comments
for you to accept this?
As you are clearly a person who always treads lightly with your own comments to other people and NEVER offends anyone ...........
PS i think he is insulting you for the forum persona you portray given you numerous postings this could hardly be due to ignorance as to phobia what exactly is he scared of?
****ing hell rudeboy, one light hearted comment and you go and troll the thing to death, go for a bike ride and relax!
Nice self portrait, headfirst. Very apt forum name, too!
I got a mouthful of homophobic abuse from the passengers in the back (to be fair, I was in lycra...)
I got a mouthful of racist abuse from the passengers in the back (to be fair, I had quite a tan...)
See, it's almost as though Swadey is somehow condoning the actions of these nubskulls; as though he can understand their desire to abuse someone they see as different to themselves.
Whilst their actions are disgusting, Swadey's comments seem to suggest 'ah well, I was asking for it, wearing lycra'. That's the bit I have a problem with. That he himself associates the wearing of lycra with homosexuality. And that homosexuality is somehow a 'crime'; 'deviant' behaviour that deserves to be treated with fear and hate. I've requested an explanation of this, yet not received a suitable reply.
it's a forum that regards most lycra clad roadies as deviants from the norm...
Is it? Or is that simply the view of a few numpties who want to have someone else to point and laugh at, so they can feel better than them, and about themselves?
I know this has made some of you feel very uncomfortable, and your anger towards me does not in any way come as any surprise.
But before you get all het up; have a little think about what I've written.
Of course, I can't help it if you're a bit thick, and don't get it. I've explained things clearly enough now.
Good god....
Sorry, should'nt mention religion, might offend someone... ๐ฏ
not sure if I'd have showed that much restraint swadey, I don't think there's anything to be gained from arguing with idiots like that (eh RudeBoy?) better to just let them go on their merry way and if you think it would be deemed an offence, report the incident but don't expect any action to be taken
Simple, wing mirror then no wing mirror.
RB, blimey you must be bored chap!
good self control swadey, ultimately the best course of action if not the most gratifying
I wear lycra and I find it great on road or mt bikes. The extra pad helps with comfort, stays dry and makes you look like a porn star-I wish! maybe the stunt guy? it's a dangerous job but someone has to do it... ๐ฏ
Lycra stops the muscles vibrating and also add some aero.
I love it how feels/ fit. Only prob I'm out of shape to look macho-my arse looks big in this...
I would have got my camera out and recorded them being abusive and chucking beer. Ignore the immature idiots-jealous of you riding and having the fitness and wave your little finger at them.
I couldn't care if people thought I was gay. I have friends who are gay and they never wear lycra! ๐
rudeboy has confirmed my suspicions - he is a first class self righteous bell end
he is a first class bell end
You missed out self-righteous
better?
Of course, I can't help it if you're a bit thick, and don't get it. I've explained things clearly enough now.
Yes we disagree with you clearly we must be a bit thick no other possible cause is there? Please feel free to go find somewhere where the folk can stay with an intelectual giant such as yourself.... i suspect though that you may just need a mirror for that.
I make jokes about my gay friends in the same way I make jokes about my fat friends and my friends who ride better than me - nothing is meant and no one gets their knickers in a twist, so wind your neck back in.
To be fair you just kidding and making short 'bloke' talk.
I can understand that as well as others but not everyone will and can find it offensive.
E.g. We can say yeah he looks gay in lycra etc but some gay people will tell you to F*** off for comments like that.
Rudeboy has a point as it's no different to making short comments about women or black people. Thing is people do jest but some ppl are offended big time. Some ppl will ignore it but Rudeboy is the type of person who will say thats not right. _he has to recognise that swadey meant nothing but jest but Rudeboy has a point before everyone nails into him.
Anyway shame on those nasty Landrover passengers.
Can I just say that I find RB's misspellings (like 'does not in any way') really offensive?
I am well aware that Swadey is just trying to be humourous. From previous posts of his, I can see nothing that would make me believe he is homophobic at all. I'm not accusing him of being so. But I find the 'laughing off' of the incident, and the hate from those vile individuals, as a tad unsettling. Personally, I would be reporting the incident, and making a point of the hate crime committed. As I would if I witnessed racist or misogynist behaviour. I don't see why such behaviour should be tolerated at all, in our society, and that only by speaking out, can it be addressed.
Personally, I'm sick of all this 'gay/jey/ghey' 'banter' on here, and the way that being 'gay' is to be an object of derision; homosexuality is seen by too many people as undesirable, and something which deserves attack. And people are very quick to defend their homophobic attitudes, I notice. Homophobia does not exclusively manifest itself in the form of a neanderthal hate-filled thug; it exists in all sorts of seemingly innocuous forms, such as in some casual comments made on here, far too often.
All I've asked for, is that people might give a moment to consider their own attitudes. That this has been met with abuse and insults, sadly does not in any way surprise me. It seems that quite a few are simply not mature enough to be able to face up to their own prejudices. I can understand this; that takes some courage. People can't help being weak-minded.
Inertestingly; those who are quick to abuse me, jolly well have not actually offered any intelligent response to my comments. Had they done so, I might respect their onions more. As it is, I will treat their childish and stupid comments with the respect they deserve; none.
I'll continue to challenge what I perceive to be phobic attitudes. And I won't really care if others object to this. If you've got an argument, state it intelligently and with conviction. Resorting to abuse is cowardly and pathetic.
I will treat their childish comments
does not in any way
jolly well have not
Oh the irony

LOL, this from someone who wishes another human being (Thatch) dead.
I would judge going by RB's behaviour of late his days under his current cover are numbered. No doubt to return a few weeks later though, under an 'oh so ironic' new user name....
My 2p's worth anyhow.... 8)
LOL, this from someone who wishes another human being (Thatch) dead.
And that's got exactly what to do with this particular topic?
Utterly predictable responses. Attack the person, yet fail to respond to what they say.
My 2p's worth anyhow....
Not even worth that, tbh.
RB do you have any friends at all? You are the most obnoxious, opinionated, bollox talking, cock sure little man. Did you get bullied at school, i sincerely hope so! That would go some-way to explain your nobishness!
Ok, for Landan weighting lets round it up to 5p.... ๐
I'm glad I score so highly in your estimation of me. ๐
Swadey's comments were in relation to himself - it's known as being self-deprecating. it's something people do when they don't take themselves too seriously, but i guess some on here wouldn't know much about that.
FWIW there was a fashion for those who may by common vernacular be described as gay, to wear lycra when going out for the evening, quite some years ago now. i guess this is where the association comes from. HTH.
afraid i can't be bothered to find any 'proof' of this though. sorry.
i had a nice ride today ๐
RB, you are like a dog with a bone, all the grown ups are able to understand that on occasions we may make slight faux pas and say something inappropriate, that's life, it happens, tough shit. Now stop bleating, if your fingers need that much frantic and speedy exercise I am sure there may be a desperate woman somewhere who may welcome your attention, just keep your mouth shut or even she will develop the inclination to shove them up your arse. Oh, and if I have cause anyone any offence by this comment - tough titties :D!
swadey - top self control sir, wish I could always do likewise.
Reels 'em in... ๐
Too easy. Just, too easy....
RudeBoy - MemberReels 'em in...
Too easy. Just, too easy....
age old trick of pretending to be trolling/fishing when things turn nasty! RB grow some!
I've already got some mate! Pity some of you jolly well have not...
I mentioned that I expected abuse, rather than any actual intelligent responses. and you've certainly not let me down, on that score! Sooo predictable. Unable to actually formulate an intelligent response, so you resort to abuse, and attempts to belittle me. Hazzunt worked, has it?
Seriously, if anyone is actually capable of something intelligent, I'll give it some consideration.
fred read the tags!
RudeBoy, I've never read any other threads by you so I'm not sure what the references to your forum behaviour are about. I will say that I can see where you're coming from here though.
It's that whole 'if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem' thing. I think you're right to speak up and challenge things, even if the OP didn't actually mean any offence.
For example some of my colleagues say '**** Shop'. Whilst they may not mean to offend, ultimately I feel I have to say something. If we don't challenge the 'little' things like this, then how are we ever going to sort this world out.
Swadey - I am in no way inferring you are homophobic (or indeed racist) in any way! Sorry to hear about the incident in general. Hopefully there's some karma at work somewhere and they're having something unpleasant done to them ๐
{It's a lovely summers evening - far too nice to be sniping at each other on here, so lets all chill a little - eh? - Mod}
