These pedals only have an allen key fitting not a spanner fitter.
I can't seem to get them to remove with an allen key and extension bar.

Bigger extension bar. You are loosening to the rear of the bike both sides aren't you?

Put the allen key in with the pedal at the bottom of the stroke and the allen key pointing horizontally towards the back wheel.
Stand round the side you wish to remove, put the back brake on, put your foot on the allen key and transfer your weight onto it.
Pedal might spin back on you which is why you dont stand on the pedal with your toes pointing towards the bars, stand sideways, then at worst it might hit your calf.
Never found a pedal that didn't succumb...
