Fixing a rear flat on Mrs K’s santa cruz juliana, put wheel back and the gear hanger / thready bit looks like this
I’m presuming there’s some sort of locknut which should be threaded on?

I don't know but I feel like there should be telltale marks/scratches in the paint if there was.

My Bird Aether 9 does that - not as far out but does have the rear axle sticking out about 1.5mm...

Is yours secured into the drop-out? This one isn’t secured at all, there no thread in the drop-out.

Ah, yes...mine screws in and once it is tight enough to close the lever it is set.

This picture looks like there should be a collar on the outside of the thready bit
