[Closed] Is it normal for a new drivetrain to be a bit noisy?

Hi everyone,
I have nearly finished my first bike build, a Specialized Epic. I have used some bits I already had (wheels, forks, bar and stem) but everything else brand new.

All gears are shifting as they should, however the drive train does appear a bit noisy, I have made sure the front mech is not touching the chain. Seems to be when the chain makes contact with the chain rings and cassette. Is this normal when new? Does it just need to wear in?

Drive train spec as follows;
Shimano
Deore M590 Triple 22,32,44
HG50 9 speed cassette 11-34
HG73 9 Speed Chain (shortened to 55")
SLX M662 Shadow 9 Speed rear mech (long cage)
SL-M530 Deore shifters

Thanks ๐Ÿ˜€

Is your upper jockey wheel too close to the cassette perhaps? I had this on my road bike, adjusted the B-screw to add tension and the noise went.

Please dont be insulted, but you have routed the chain through the rear derailleur correctly and not over the metal guide between the jokeys? Its an incredibly common mistake that causes a fair bit of chain noise as it rubs away.

I have a simular problem.

Fitted a new chain and cassette and large chain ring (22/32/44).

Adjusted the mech to suit the cassette, but for some reason I get "resonance' (sp) through the chain while notin full press on the pedal.

Changed the chain ring to 22/38 and it has gone.

Gutted as the 44 was great for long work.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps.

Grimy, no worries, not insulted, its always best to start with the simple fixes, I have checked though.

Ill try adjusting the B screw this evening, this I had overlooked. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I'm getting the noise in all chain rings so I don't think its being caused by that. Hope not anyways. ๐Ÿ™‚

In the mean time can anyone see anything wrong with the compatibility of the hardware I have chosen?
Deore M590 Triple 22,32,44
HG50 9 speed cassette 11-34
HG73 9 Speed Chain (shortened to 55")
SLX M662 Shadow 9 Speed rear mech (long cage)
SL-M530 Deore shifters

Thanks again.
Chris

If you've checked all of the above, it's probably nothing to worry about, we often get noisy drivetrains on new bikes, sometimes sounds as if the chain's rubbing the front mech despite it being nowhere near.

I sometimes find that they can be a bit noisy and difficult to dial out on the stand, a couple of fine adjustments on the first proper ride seems to sort it

Check if it's indexed properly.
If the cable is over tight chain will rub on the up shift ramps on rear cassette.
Chain will shift correctly but will be noisy.
Try backing off cable at shifter end. Try 1/4 to 1/2 turn a time.
Also check cable isn't to tight before any adjustment of the cable adjuster by shifter.

when i first went 3x10 i found it was quite noisy....it settled down after about 5 rides or so, i found it especially noisy when going into grit and stuff for the first time and seemed to take an age to clear off...

also if it seems noisy in your workstand etc, mine did to, but out on the trails you dont really notice it, even when it sounds like the 1st (biggest rear cog) gear is catching and scraping when in the work stand in reality when pedalling uphill etc when you'd use it i couldnt hear a thing when outdoors....

my 9speed setup i dont ever remember being noisy tbh, but i certainly noticed it more with 10speed....

give it chance to settle down

Grimy has a pretty solid point!

Your parts are compatible, no issue there. No-one's mentioned BB spacers yet, remember it's 2 drive, 1 non drive for 68 and 1 drive only for 73. I bet it's something really small that's responsible.

Checking the indexing is a good one too as said by argoose. You can just gently press on the derailleur in/out and if it loses the noise then adjust as advised.

Is it noisy in use or just at home indoors?

The BB shell on the epic is 73 so I used just one spacer on the drive side, which I'm pretty sure is correct.

The frame is a 2008 woman's epic comp (medium), its for my wife to replace her myka.

I'm waiting for new brakes to arrive so its not been ridden yet, just turned the peddles on the maintenance stand indoors.

Thanks again for the advice, I'll check the B screw adjustment and indexing when I get home this evening.

Cheers
Chris

Right, think I got it sorted! I bought my slightly less clean Orange five in the house last night to compare set up. I checked the distance from jocky wheel to cassete and adjusted the B screw to bring the jocky wheel closer and fine tuned the cable tension with the barrel adjuster on the shfter. Much quieter now, pretty much the same as the five. ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks for your help chaps.
