motorman, your bike actually looks quite good, I would like to try one. The write up in ST seemed to me to say they didnt enjoy it much, but thats quite subjective, or just the way I read it.

They're fun bikes off road. They're not that good in actual slick mud, but on rocky stuff they're ace fun.
<just slurred "a fat recumbent!" with a mouthful of food. Jeez. My eyebrows nearly hit the ceiling. Epicyclo will be ordering one today. That thing is strathpufferable.
The bike in the ST review did not really have the correct tyres for the conditions they were testing the bike in.
If it had a set of these on, then i'm sure the review would have been written very differently.. 😉

Should add, the new surly tyres were not available in this country when the ST review was written. I shipped mine in from the states at about the same time....they are a mud revelation

Do these fatbikes actually exist, i thought they were just photo-shopped 26ers.
I cant imagine anyone wasting there hard earned money on such a contraption.
people will be trying 29ers next rather than just dismissing them because they know someone that tried one round the carpark and didnt like it

Out of all the niche crap I've come across on the forum, the fatbike is the only one I'd ever consider riding. I don't think I'd spend my own money on one, but I imagine they're quite fun.
Im surrounded by them here In East Lothian and whilst they are not my thing the guys that have seem to have a good crack on them . Almost all of them do own other bikes and can be 'Hoorin' It down Glentress or cross country riding in the woods followed by pub stops.
If I had a spare £1500 I probably wouldn't spend It on a Fatbike but hey Live and let live.

Are they acceptably fast on the road? I'm torn between a fat bike and maybe a 69er monster crosser. Both seem incredibly versatile, maybe cross the two and build a drop-bar fat bike?
no. I think you might be better off with a roadbike if that's a concern.
I don't think Fat or CX bikes are versatile at all, depends how you like to ride tho.

That was kind of my thinking, hence the idea of mixing up the two ideas to make for a more versatile solution. I'm thinking that the ability of the fat tyre to conform to the road surface should make for relatively low rolling resistance compared to, say, a mountain bike knobbly or semi-slick? Just thinking aloud really.

tried a half fat and played on another mans big fat one, it's fun but my brain can't get over the weight penalty, so there will be some fat fronts and rears plus rubber comming up soon.
They're not dreadful on the road imo, but there's a world of difference between a monstercross bike and a fatbike imo

If you want to ride fast on the road get a roadbike, not a tourer or a CX bike or a monster/fat bike. once you've ridden a roadbike at a fast pace all of them feel absolutely shit in comparison!

No matter how much I think I'm going at a decent lick on a CX bike, tourer or hybrid-ised MTB, the feeling of (relatively)effortless speed on a proper road bike is always refreshing.
I see plodding along softer surfaces slower as more of a chore than a laugh! MTBs are slow enough already without hunting out even slower terrain!

No, it's just you can't ride them there. At all.
More pathetic rules from the UCI to stop riders switching to fatbikes for the big mountain climbs in major tours. Too much advantage from rolling resitance and also the aerodynamic benefit of sheltering behind a wide tyre.
