Have wondered about bike specific insurance. What else do people do, it seems to me to insure say £3,000 of bike is about £30 a month. That's more than my fully comp car insurance. Seems odd when I can cause so much damage in a car by comparison and its far, far more likely to create a claim. I've had a car nicked, but never a bike cos I'm always near it I suppose.

My home contents covers my bike in the house, so the bike insurance would only be used in case (a) it gets nicked from the car at trail centre, (b) gets nicked from a lockup at somewhere I'm staying, or (c) gets reversed over by someone in a car park who then disappears.

Now, I can't see why that should break £300 a year, seems extremely expensive to me. I double checked my house contents insurance very carefully when I bought it and I'm definitely covered for fire or theft from the property and car insurance only covers £250 of bike being nicked from it so that's a waste of time.

Are there any other cheap places that take into account that you don't want cover in the house or anything. Is it a great big rip off? ...are people abusing the insurance and sending the prices up? ...or do I have to pay the same as someone who leaves their bikes unattended loads, cos I just don't, but I'd like a little more peace of mind for the odd time I want to leave it in the car and get something to eat or whatever. Suggestions?

(Already have Abus and Krpyt bike locks totalling nearly £100 too which I use in bike lock ups of course)

I insure using Hiscox, not expensive and 100% cover. (also handy if you travel abroad, places of conflict etc)

Interesting about M&S, I'll have to look at that next time round. Wouldn't mind something in the meantime though (about 9 months to run), I did ask for price to add to my contents insurance as it is but it was a silly amount and they didn't fully cover the value anyway if I remember.

I had a quick look at Hiscox to see if it was suggested for bike specific insurance but the website doesn't mention bike insurance so I take it that was another house contents example?
